UNBROKEN

SIXTEENTH INSTALMENT

That night after our first kiss all I could do was smile. My soul was buzzing.

Pam and I went inside via the back door that Mum had left open for us. We tiptoed past Mum's room so as not to wake her but I can guarantee that she would have been waiting and had we been late she would have been waiting on the back veranda.

I had a double bed so Pam and I slept in it together. We talked till the sun came up about how we were feeling and about my kiss and about Dan and just about everything really. We planned that we would join Dan and Pam's partner next weekend also on another date. We were so excited.

When we finally woke up mum had already left for work. She left me a note saying

"I hope you had a good night sweetheart, I will see you when I get home". Pam and I just hung around all day at my house and Nigel came over as he was living just down the road at the time. We watched movies and just relaxed all together. It was a great day. I told Nigel what had happened and he was happy for me at the same time he was worried and said

"if he ever hurts you I will kill him". I thought this was cute as he truly was one of my best mates.

It is really hard for me to write about Nigel so I won't go in to him just yet any further. Just know that he was a HUGE part of my life and he would make a huge change in it a little later, but for now I have to leave him as it hurts too much. I will get to his story and his impact on my life though just not now.

Mum got home after Pam had left. She sat down with me on my bed and asked how my night was. I told her but not about the car ride on the way home or she would have lost it. I told her Dan kissed me and being young and naive I thought it was love and I guess back then it was and my first love at that. She was supportive but told me to be cautious, take my time and just have fun. Fun is exactly what I intended on having but I also thought I was so much older than my 14 years.

When I returned to school all my girl friends wanted to know how it went. By this stage they had all dated.

Trish had a 21 year old boyfriend and I didn't like him much as he use to hit her. She would come to my house and stay over (Trish and I were very close, she saved me one day, I will go in to this at a later date) and we would talk about it I would tell her she deserved better, then she would leave him and then she would go back over and over. At that time I didn't understand it but I stood by her as best I could. If he was ever around I would say hi and that was all he was really nice to me but I didn't like how he treated Trish.

I told everyone how it went and they were all so happy for me. During each day we would walk past where Dan and his mates sat. I would say hi and act like it was no big deal when I walked past but we would look at each other and smile with our eyes. Dan's brother was in my year at school and one of my mates so we would pass notes back and forward through him. It was all very exciting. Everytime I walked somewhere that Dan had been I could smell his cologne and I would look around but most of the times he had been and gone. Funny how a smell can make you thing of someone or something.

Dan invited me out again the next weekend and Pam was going to come and stay at my house. This time we were going to the beachside town that my Pa lived in just for a drive to the beach at night. I asked mum if we could go out to dinner as I didn't think she would allow me just to go for a drive. She said yes because Pam was also going to be there.

Again the preparations had started but I found out that Dan hated people who smoked so I brushed my teeth and washed my hair before going near him (every time). Dan arrived at about 7:30pm and again mum said be back by 11pm no later.

I again sat in the front of Dans car while Pam, her partner and Shaun sat on the back seat. Shaun was a good friend of Dan's I didn't expect him to be there but he was. Shaun was really good looking and I found it strange that he didn't have a girl friend at the time. He was a super nice guy and treated me like royalty. On the way out to the beach we listened to guns n roses again (they were really popular back then). Pam's partner was drinking in the back and sitting behind me. I noticed bright lights following us, the person behind turned on their high beam and got really close to Dan's car.

Dan sped up to try and get away from them but they kept doing it. Pam's partner put his top half of his body out the window and told the guy where to go. That seemed to only upset these people more. They got closer and closer. Then Pam's partner who was a bit drunk throw a bottle at their car. We heard the smash at it hit the front of their car then next (we had no idea he did it until we heard the smash) this caused them to try and run us off the road. They were going to kill us. I was so scared. As I knew the beachside town so well I told Dan where to drive to try and loose them but it wasn't working. We finally got half way up a hill and could see their lights so Dan turn off his lights and drove in to a drive way and waited for them to pass. Not long after we parked the car sped past us they were still looking for us but this road you couldn't turn around unless you went in to someone's driveway or got to the top where the water tower was. Phew! We had lost them thank god. Dan drove back out of the driveway then he started yelling at Penny's partner about how stupid that was etc etc. we made our way back down the hill and drive to the beach. We parked the car and got out and walked across the bridge that went over the creek. We walked for ages then we sat on the beach. We were all talking about general stuff, then Dan stood up and took my hand and said

"Emily, let's go for a walk" I looked at him and immediately got up and followed. We walked up the beach away from everyone. When we got far enough away he asked me to sit with him. He held me in his arms and started sing me the song "patience" by guns n roses. It brought tears to my eyes. When he finished he said to me that he thought he was falling in love with me and that's once the day he first saw me he wanted to come up and kiss me. Wow if I didn't cry before I did then. Such beautiful words. All that was going through my mind was "there are good men out there". I blurted out I love you too Dan. Then he leaned in and kissed me.

We spoke about us and what future he could see for us. It was all so romantic almost like novels that you read. He told me as soon as he left school which was only a month away he would have to go away for his apprenticeship week on and week off for training in a near by town but that he would call me every night he was away...

All the way home he held my hand only taking his away to change gears if required. He kept looking at me and smiling. I was so happy I had tears in my eyes all the way home. By the time I got home I had forgotten all about the car chase and the possibility of being killed. I was on cloud nine....
