"Mommy please wake up," I said shaking her head. I got up from the floor and grabbed mommy's phone. 9-1-1. "Hello?" I said in a trembling voice. "911 what's your emergency?"
"Mommy's sleeping."
"I'm sorry what was that?"
"Mommy's sleeping but she won't wake up."
"Oh, um, can you tell me your name."
"Felix."
"Okay, Felix can you tell me what happened."
"Daddy came home and then he left and now Mommy is sleeping on the floor and she is leaking red."
"Um, Felix is there anyone else in your house."
"No, it's just me, Mommy and baby Tere-" it was at that moment when I realized that I left Teressa alone. A baby who couldn't talk and just started crawling alone. I dropped the phone and ran upstairs. "TERRI!" I yelled tripping over my own two feet. I walked into my room and I saw Teressa in a corner. "Terri?" I slowly walked towards her. I heard sirens approaching the house but I could only focus on Teressa. "I'm sorry Teressa," I said as I sat down next to her. Teressa turned and looked at me and crawled into my arms. "I promise I'll never leave you alone again. I promise Teressa."

PRESENT DAY
"Phew, that's the last of them!" I exclaimed as I lay in bed. "Damn, who knew you had so many clothes when you wear the same pair of shorts and the same shirt every day," says Teressa as she collapsed in bed with me. We spent the entire day packing and preparing for the move, and before I knew it, it was nighttime. "Hey what is that supposed to mean, and no cursing in the house. You know Mom hates it when we curse." I say as I turn my head and look at my sister. "I know, but Mommy curses sometimes too," she says looking at me. "Oh, you hear the phone calls too," I ask. "Yea... I don't understand why she still talks to him," she says turning her head towards the ceiling. "Well, that makes two of us," I say as I look at the ceiling as well. "I also overheard you and mom talking this morning," she says. "Really? Sorry you had to hear me yelling." I say sheepishly. "Felix..." Teressa begins. I could hear her voice beginning to shake. I sit up and look at my sister. "Will we ever be happy?" My sister asks through the thousands of tears running down her face. "Come here," I say as I open my arms and my sister jumps into them sobbing. I can't help but feel sorry for her, I had the worst experience with my father but she doesn't have a single memory with him. I hug my sister tightly and comfort her through her sobs." Hey, what if when we make it to New York we can try to make the greatest memories ever. We can make new friends, get new clothes and toys, and try new things. How does that sound?" Teressa looks at me as she sniffles and wipes the tears off her face. "Sounds like a plan." She says smiling. "Ok then but for now we need to get some sleep." Teressa nods. I take her to her bed and tuck her in. I walk out of her room. "Goodnight Teressa," I say. "Goodnight Felix, and thank you." I smile, "you're welcome." I shut the door and head downstairs. I go by my mom's room and see her on the floor beside her bed. I eavesdrop outside the door and hear what she is saying. "Dear God, I just don't know what to do anymore I want to take care of my kids but I feel like I'm doing everything wrong. Please give my children and I strength for when we make this big change in our lives and head to New York. I want this to be an opportunity for us to grow closer to each other and grow closer to you. Thank you father, Amen." I usually don't pray as much as my mom does. I feel like God doesn't want to talk to me since I have messed up so badly so many times in my life. He says be kind to others and I yell at my mom when she doesn't deserve it. He says to forgive but I will never forgive my father after what he put my family through. I hesitate to walk in and talk to my mom, but I feel this lump in my throat and I can feel the tears ready to break free so I run back upstairs instead. I run into my room and close the door. I hop into bed and sob into my pillow as I slowly drift to sleep.

BEEP BEEP BEEP BEE- I yank the plug connecting to the outlet. I can't believe it's morning already. I pull my blankets over my head and try to sleep a bit more. BAAM! I jump out of bed and fall onto the floor. I see that Teressa slammed the door open."Ugh, What the hell Teressa?" I glare at her. "You need to get up Felix our flight departs in four hours and you need to get ready. Did you know that a flight from San Fransisco to New York takes over five hours and did you know that-"
"blah-blah-blah I get it your smart you know everything," I say in a flat tone. "Felix, are you aware that Mommy and I are all ready to leave and you're just waking up?" Teressa tells me in a know it all voice. "What? that can't be my alarm went off like five minutes ago." I say looking for my phone to check the time. "If by five minutes ago you mean an hour ago then yeah, but you need to hurry it up bro," Teressa says as she walks out the door. "CRAP!" I grab a white shirt and some jeans and slip them on. I check my hair in my phone's camera. Messy like always, blond hair and red-orange tips, brown eyes and face in need of washing. I run into the restroom and wash up. I check my room one last time to see if I'm forgetting anything. I grab my phone and my headphones and rush out the door. "About time" yelled Teressa. "At least I brushed my hair," I say as I ruffled her short blond hair with dark blue tips at the end. "Hey!" she screams as she punches me in the arm. I laughed. "Okay is everyone ready?" my mom asks with a smile on her face."READY!" my sister and I shout."Alright then, New York here we come." my mom begins to drive off when-"WAIT STOP THE CAR I NEED TO USE THE BATHROOM!" I yell. "Ugh seriously, Felix," says Teressa. I hopped off the car. I lied. I didn't need to use the restroom I just wanted to see the house one last time...

" Mommy are we there yet?" groaned Teressa for the millionth time. Mother sighed, "No, Terri, the airport is far away and it will take us a while to get there so please in the meantime try to distract yourself. "
"But there is nothing to do," Teressa pouted and crossed her arms. God, this girl can be so annoying. "Mom, can we stop by a gas station? I need to use the restroom." I say. I've been trying to hold it in but, if I do any longer I feel like I might explode. "Sure sweetie, I need to get gas anyway. Just give me a minute." My mother's name is Joy Enderson. She still has that bastard's last name even though they are divorced. Why doesn't she change it? He was such an asshole. He nearly killed her. I promised myself to never be like that son of a bitch and take care of my family. I'm the man of the house and I have to make sure my family is safe. I may only be fourteen, but I'll do whatever it takes to keep my family safe. "Okay, we're here." said my mom as she parked in front of the gas station. I got out of the car and headed towards the little convenience store. "C'mon Terri. You should go and use the restroom too." I tell Teressa. "I'm coming, Felix." We walk into the store and look for the restroom. "Fluffers? What kind of a gas station name is Fluffers?" exclaimed Teressa. "Ha, kinda sounds like Fuc-"
"Ahem!" I turn around to see the store manager glarring at me. I laugh sheepishly and wave at the manager. So much for a stupid joke. I grab Teressa and take her to the restroom. "Okay, wait right here. Don't go anywhere, okay?" I tell Teressa. "Can I get a snack?" asked Teressa."What? No, you just ate some chips a while ago."
"I'm not going to eat it right away. I'll save it for when we get on the plane."
"But you don't have any money."
"But you do."
"Nu-uh. No way. I'm not giving you any money."
"Are you telling me that you are going to let a poor eight-year-old child die of hunger?"
"Oh my god. I bet you're not even hungry. You're just going to end up buying a toy. I need to use the restroom." I turn around when Teressa suddenly screams, "THIS MAN HATES STARVING AFRICANS!" What the hell Teressa?! I turn and glare at her. Everyone was starring at me. "What the heck was that? What is wrong with you?"
"You were willing to let me starve."
"Teressa, First of all, I never said anything about African Americans. Second of all, you don't scream stuff like that."
"So are you going to give me some money or not?"
"No." I turn around again when Teressa screams. "THIS MAN IS WILLING TO LET A CHILD STARVE!" Once again, I can feel the eyes of everyone burning into my back."Jesus Christ. Here, now let me use the restroom." I give Teressa a five-dollar bill. "Thank you." Teressa turns around and skips her way to the candy section. That little brat. After using the restroom and getting Teressa's snack we walk out of the store and get in the car. "Okay is everyone ready to go?" asked Mom. "Ready!" Yelled Teressa. "Alright then off we go." We drove for a couple more minutes and arrived at the airport. "Oh my god, Felix we're here." Teressa giggled and hopped out of the car. "Mommy, come on we are going to miss our flight!!!!" Yelled Teressa as she got her suitcase out of the trunk. "I'm coming sweetie." Mom and I get out of the car and get our stuff. The three of us all held hands and took in a deep breath. "Okay guys," said my mother looking at both of us, "The next big part of our lives BEGINS!"
