I tapped my foot against the plastic chair of my desk, counting the time in halves. I only have to get through five minutes, two times, and then I can see Jax.

We were studying Shakespeare's Othello in English class, not that I was paying attention. What I was actually doing was hiding my phone behind my book—a trick I'd learned from Jax (the master of avoiding his schoolwork, as he often put it) but barely ever used. I honestly didn't understand the logistics of it; shouldn't somebody have noticed by now that it'd been fifteen minutes since I'd last turned a page?

I was, of course, texting Lily and the others in their group chat—all of which planned to come with me the picosecond the bell set us free. Eleni was driving, Aisha was tagging along to get a drive home, and I even stole shotgun before Lily could claim it.

Aisha:
OMG AM I IN CHARGE OD MUSIC?

Eleni:
Tentatively maybe

Lily:
u might be in charge od music but are you in charge OF music ???

Aisha:
🙄🙄🙄 i did not ask

Eleni:
Two messages previously, and I quote... "am I in charge of music?"

Lily:

Eleni:
What

Kacie:
Shouldn't it be three

Lily:

Aisha:

Eleni:

Aisha:

Lily:

Aisha:

[user] AISHA has changed the group chat name to [DEMOCRACY IS DEAD 💀]

Lily:

[user] LILY has changed the group chat name to [AI NEEDS TO CHILL]

Aisha:
Wow rude
But like you can't shun me for telling the truth

Kacie:
Voting isn't part of democracy?

Eleni:
What she said

Aisha:
DONT QUESTION ME

Kacie:
Anyway eight minutes

Aisha:
ONG THANK YOU

Kacie:

Aisha:

The clock in the psychology room is brOKEN

Kacie:

Lily:

Aisha:

Lily:
