Chapter 102: Fifth Life - Awakening in a New Time

"Ah, you must be Miss Ming Yan." Yi Fei's voice speaks with quaint elegance as if singing a song.

"Yes, Sect Leader."

"Please stand."

"Thank you, Sect Leader," Ming Yan smiles wide. For the first time she's meeting her most loved idol. Her excitement could not be more obvious.

Yi Fei turns to me and says, "Mingxian, I have so much to tell you."

"Uh, actually the name is Yuxing."

"Let's talk in private."

Yi Fei stares at Ming Yan until Ming Yan catches on.

"I'll leave you two to talk then." She exits Tian Guang Hall and closes the doors.

"Oh, my legs are too weak. Let's sit down," Yi Fei lets out a tired breath.

I walk her over to two golden chairs covered by thin red drapes. She takes a seat and seems to be more at ease when resting her muscles. I stand next to her, not sure on what to do. 

She is now back in her world, the renowned fairy of healing, Sect Leader of Invigorating Essence. Can we really still be informal with one another?

"Mingxian-- I'm sorry. Yuxing, why don't you sit next to me." She offers the other chair. I bowed slightly and does as she says. 

She grabs a hold of my hands, looking at me with soft eyes and a warm smile. 

"Yuxing, you don't have to be so formal with me. After all, we've spent over three-hundred years together."

"Sect Leader Gao-- I mean... Yi Fei, do you remember everything?" I ask.

"Well, most of my conscious mind was here. As you could tell, the other part of my soul was so minuscule that I wasn't able to behave normally. But yes, I remember everything during the time I was in my coma."

"That's insane!"

She shrugs. "It really is."

"Anyway, I'm glad you're back. You can take charge of Invigorating Essence again."

"Maybe, I want to do something different for once. You know travel the world with you?"

"Don't you want to know what has happened to Invigorating Essence while you were gone?"

"I mean you told me all about it, remember?"

"Well, it just looks like they could use a leader. Ming Yan isn't even willing to assume Sect Leader. She's too busy attending to that demon."

"You mean Kong Shuguang?"

"Yi Fei! He's not Kong Shuguang anymore, okay? He's a demon with lust for blood."

She giggles, "How ironic."

"What?"

"Yuxing, do you really want to run away from him?"

I take my hands away from hers, reshuffling my sitting position.

"I'm not running away. What do I have to run away from? I'm merely tired of living a life of being used."

"You know I remember everything, right? Everything from the Underworld..."

"And?"

"You cried a lot when you came back as Rong Xin. You thought I wasn't able to understand, but I did. I just wasn't able to comfort you."

I reject her ridiculous observation from the past. Standing up, I shake my head, "Yi Fei, don't make stuff up. I wasn't crying. The air in the Underworld isn't that good! Something was always caught in my eyes." 

She rolls her eyes. 

"What was that?"

"What?"

"Did you just roll your eyes at me?"

"I'm reacting to your stubbornness."

Crossing my arms, I tell her, "I liked it better when you were stupid."

"Well, thank you for bring me back. I owe you." Stiffly working her legs, she stands and wraps her arms around me. 

"I don't like this, Fei."

"It's a hug representing my gratefulness for your friendship."

"All right, you can let go now."

She releases her hold with a sigh.

"I do have something very important to tell you."

Skeptical, I warn her, "Yi Fei, I'm not going to do you any more favors. Sneaking you out of purgatory and the Underworld is already enough to get me punished for eternity."

"No. No, I'm so grateful for all that you have done. I wouldn't want to burden you any more than this."

"Then what is it you wanna tell me?"

"It's a secret that Kong Shuguang told me."

My heart almost stops. I know I shouldn't be effected since it was so many lifetimes ago, but I can't help it but be influenced by his name.

"Whatever it is, I don't want to know."

"But Mingxian--"

"It's all behind me now. If you are really my friend then you won't bring any of this back up."

Fei Fei closes her eyes and sighs again, "Fine."

For another ten years, I would return to visit Fei Fei at Invigorating Essence Sect a couple of times. She wanted to experience another form of life, but since Invigorating Essence was without a leader, she decided to do the responsible thing and reported to that title. It made sense, plus she had to start cultivating again and heal. 

Ten years has passed... Ten whole years of traveling. All liberating and frightening at the same time.

Chuju and I traveled to different places from the East to West. We saw many different types of people with pale skin and blue eyes and those with tanner skin and large eyes of different shades. We also stopped in Joseon for a few years. The language wasn't hard to learn and the food was satisfying. The most fun for me was the mid-western countries that had lively music and beautiful clothing that jangled to the rhythm of drums. People were more willing to spend when drinking and celebrating with a large fire to dance around.

I wasn't expecting to come back to our home country.

And yet here I am, on this carriage to our next destination.

Yeguang City.
