The dragon leapt over them, wings swooping downwards. The wind was so strong, it shoved Tavia to the pavement. The dragon opened its maw, roared, and launched onto the octopus creature with all four limbs. The wings flapped furiously, struggling to maintain balance as the tail snapped over the dragon's back like a stinger. The octopus caught the tail, however, with two tentacles, wrapping another three around the dragon's midsection. Raising its hooded head, the octopus opened its beaked mouth and bit the dragon's neck.

The dragon snarled, jerking backwards. Its claws tore at the octopus' softer skin, but the octopus' suckers held on fast, despite the slick blood that started to pool around the tentacles. Not the octopus creature's, Tavia suspected, but the dragon's. She'd seen the teeth hiding in the suckers.

The dragon's tail lashed, managing to score the octopus' hood. Bright pink blood oozed, mingled with the dragon's blue venom. The octopus clicked and snapped, tightening its hold on the dragon. They rolled onto their sides, tumbling onto the rear of the truck.

"Shit!"

Tavia ran for the vehicle. The front end bounced up in the air. The creatures tumbled in another direction, and the truck bounced forward. There was a sizable dent in the bed and a disheartening sag in the rear. One of the tires had burst under the load, and the other was canted inwards, suggesting a broken control arm or worse. The truck wasn't going anywhere.
