The ground is cold and rough, the wind is a gentle breeze, but it is still very cold. 'Maybe I fell asleep working?' Groaning and looking up to see how high the sun is. 'When do I have to get back to work?' Opening my eyes and blinking a couple times when I see the sky. The sky is dark violet, it almost seems to be glowing, the clouds are black instead of white. 'They look whipsy, almost see through. They might be clouds but it could also just be smoke, I guess' sitting up, my eyes are immediately drawn to the huge building in front of me.
"What?" I whisper, standing up and walking towards the building. It's silent, the wind has stopped and there are no birds, no insects, and no voices. Every step I take shakes the air, it's tense... suffocating. Like when I would step outside at night when lights and laughter are behind me, that lonely, sinking feeling. The ground is black and has a strange scent to it, kinda burnt but stale? The building goes on for as far as I can see. Icy blue vines are wrapped around the building, settling into the many cracks that are scattered around the strange structure. Slowly I reach for the door, it can't be that bad right? Just go in! Slowly I pull the knob.
The room that I walk into is large and dark. People are everywhere there's barely anywhere for me to even stand. People of all ages are slowly turned their heads to look at me as I just stand in the doorway. They all move to make a path for me to the front of the room, the building wasn't as big as it was outside I guess. Closing the door, I awkwardly walk to the front, I could feel my cheeks and ears get hot. I walk through the crowd hunching my shoulders so I don't bump or knock anyone over. When I get to the front there is a desk with a person behind it.
"Um? Hey? Do you know where I am?" I ask looking at the person in front of me. They are ignoring me though. I look around nervously, 'what am I supposed to do?' I let out a shaky laugh.
"Hello? Uh are you okay?" I wave my hand in front of their face slightly. They lower the book they were reading and slowly looked up to glare at me.
"What." They growl, their eyes beginning to glow purple as they glower at me. I feel shivers climb up and down my spine. Swallowing the lump in my throat, I open my mouth.
"I am extremely sorry to bother you, but I don't know where I am? I'm supposed to be at work and I cannot be late so could you please point me to the next warp pad or ariaoplane?" I smile, this is how you get what you want with people, smile and be polite. That will always be-
"There is no warp gate. The only way out is through Kataram." They spoke, their expression monotonous.
"K-Kataram?" I felt my voice pitch and shake, I haven't heard of Kataram so it can't be in Metrogama.
"Yes dumbass, that is where we are right now. Here, ugh. What's your name?" They ask, groaning and pushing their chair across the tiny desk space where there are humongous filing cabinets.
"Uh, Tobias, Tobias Smith." I respond, watching the person open a cabinet and their fingers pass over each name. Finding the one they were apparently looking for, they turn back to me and dropped the file of the desk. Opening the file they quickly start reading through the pages.
After reading all the file they pull a packet seemingly out of thin air and hand it to me with a pen.
"Stand to the side and read the top two and fill out the third and fourth." They grumble, picking their book back up. Shaking my head in confusion I look down at the packet. I look and look and look and look. I either took too long on the first page or made a sound of distress because the person was glaring at me again.
"What? Can't you read? You ARE an adult aren't you?!" They snap, looking frustrated and tired.
"No, I never had the chance to go to school to read or write, we were too busy!" I exclaim, feeling my face and ears heat up in embarrassment.
