Chapter Twenty-One

Start from the beginning

This was my chance to get my mother back - the only opportunity I had. I couldn't blow this.

Letting out a long breath, I closed my eyes and blocked out my surroundings, just picturing the image from the screen. I let it fill my mind, being the only thing I could think about.

And then I released my emotions. Not just a 'want' to get there; a need; a desire; a drive. I allowed the feelings to flow freely through my body,

The wind picked up, and I felt the cool air snake it's way under my jacket once more. I peeled my eyes open against the increasing wind, and saw the ground coming towards me at a rapid pace.

The sight elicited a scream from me just before I tumbled into the ground, rolling head over heels and getting dirt stuck in my hair.

Around me, men and women alike were screaming. I rubbed my eyes and surveyed the scene. Everyone was fighting one another, desperately trying to win for their side. Off to the side of the dirt road my mother was laying on the ground.

I wanted to help fight, but all I could think about was my mother; it was the first time I'd seen her in weeks and here she was.

My chest puffed with pride and I sprinted over to her, throwing myself down next to her. I'd almost wrapped my arms around her when Grey stopped me. He was breathing heavily.

"Fight now, get her later," he said between his breaths. My mind was torn; what he was saying made sense, but I couldn't bring myself to leave.

"Ryder," Grey's voice was fuller now that he'd taken some time to breathe. His eyes locked with me as he said the next sentence. "Fight now. We will get your mother, but later."

Just like that, my mind changed. My body was suddenly filled with an urge to fight and leave my mother's side.

"Okay," I answered, standing up and brushing the dirt off of my jacket, feeling no need at all to help my mother.

"You see the woman that Kurtis is fighting?" Grey asked, pointing towards the red-headed man who had first spotted my mother. Standing across from him, sending waves of dirt and utilizing seeds as bullets, was a woman with hair as dark as the soil she was using to fight cascading her back and covering most of her vicious face.

I nodded.

"She is the strongest out of all of them. You need to help him." Grey's voice was commanding. I simply nodded and then began watching the fight, debating when the best time to jump in would be.

"Send fire toward her when Kurtis blocks her next attack, alright? And do it from behind her," Grey ordered.

I nodded like a robot once more, and then imagined myself appearing behind her, and raised my right hand.

Everyone was so involved in their own fighting that they didn't notice my movement, but when I appeared to the back of the woman who I was supposed to attack, I still felt Grey's eyes trained on me as if he couldn't watch anything else. And not only that, he felt like a voice in the back of my head, urging me to fight and forget my mother.

Seemingly unable to do anything else, I began taking my feelings of joy from finding my mother, and began sending it toward my finger tips, turning it into magic subconsciously.

I watched the fight with diligence as I waited for the correct time to release the fire.

The woman sent a wave of dirt at Kurtis, and he sent up a shield, slamming against the dirt. Taking his cue, I released the magic, sending columns of flames flying at her. Once I felt them touch her skin, I urged them to grow larger.

The smell of burning flesh rose into the air, expanding over the area. Smoke was exploding off of her, filling my nostrils. I urged them to grow even larger. Her screaming filled the air and pierced into my soul.

And then slowly, I let the flames die down; there would be no way for her to fight in this state, even if she wanted to.

Turning around, I looked for someone else to fight, a voice in my brain pushing me to fight instead of get my mother, but then slowly, the pushing went away replaced only by the need to bring my mother back to safety.

I looked over and saw Grey too involved in his fighting to watch me. I smiled and sprinted over to my mother, kneeling down beside her.

"Mother. I''ve found you! I'm going to bring you to safety. It'll be okay," I cooed excitement lifting the tone of my voice.

"Ryder, son," she began. "Please stop. You don't understand what's happening - I'm okay I just need you to go back to the base and join the war. Our paths will meet one day once more but for now they should part."

I didn't understand what she was talking about at the time.

"No." I refused to believe it. I wrapped my arms around her and was immediately thrown into the air but before I could land, I was transported and thrown onto a cold, hard, unfamiliar floor.

I thought there may have been bars surrounding me but I wasn't sure.

All I was left with was darkness.
