Hint. I asked a question, but used a period.
That's why it was weird to read.
If a character is asking a question, you use a question mark. Now, if the character is purposly asking a dry question;
"I wonder why."
Then it's okay. The period indicates the dry not-really-a-question tone.
Otherwise: just don't!
If you end up accidentally adding a period, change it in proofreading!
