The sun is shining,
It's like, what,
900° outside?
Perfect day for the pool.

I walk out the changing rooms,
And the first thing I see,
Is a girl with a green pool noodle.

She had it tied around her waist.
She was letting it take her
Whenever the noodle wanted to float.
Her eyes were closed.

I ignored her.

I got in the pool,
And swam a couple of laps,
Before just taking a break
And backfloating.

I felt something
Hit my side.
I sat up.
It was the girl's green pool noodle.

"Sorry," she said,
In almost a whisper.
I nodded in response,
And continued to backfloat.

A few minutes later
It happened again.
"Sorry," she said,
In barely a whisper.

I nodded in response,
And continued to backfloat.

A few minutes later,
It happened again.
"Sorry," she said
Except I didn't hear her.

"Are you okay?"
I asked.
"You seem lonely."

And she smiled.
"So do you, I guess."

What in the world was wrong with her?
Did she not see that I was enjoying myself?

I nodded in response,
And continued to backfloat.

A few minutes later,
I looked up.
The girl with the green pool noodle
Was gone.

And I heard a sob from the girl's changing room.
