"You came," she said, shocked as he appeared at her door in the late hours of the night, the early of the morning. "I didn't think you were coming."

"To see you? Rice, I'm always coming back for you, baby."

"You didn't come yesterday. Or the day before," she crossed her arms, dangling her legs over her cot. "Is it because you're embarrassed I'm here?"

"We both know why, baby," he came over to her, nestling her head in his chest and running his hands through her hair. "They don't want me here. They think everytime I'm here I make you worse."

"So you come and ruin my sleep," she giggled. "I guess that's ok. How did you get in?"

"I think you know the answer to that too, K," his voice was low, tinged with darkness. "You know how better than I do."

"Will you stay with me?" she asked him, extending her small hand so her fingers danced delicately in the twilight air, spilling into the room. "You said one of these times you'll stay."

"Can't," he put his hands in his pockets and pulled away from her, his cologne inviting itself into her brain and causing puddles in her brain. "You know why for that one, too."

"Can we pretend I don't know why?" she asked timidly. She was getting bolder and bolder, asking him one more question every time he came. They both knew the answers, as it was their game, however sick and twisted it was. He shook his head and lifted her jaw up to tilt her face up towards his. "I love you, angel," he whispered.

"I love you more," she breathed out. "Don't go."

"You know I have to," he said against her ear huskily. "You know what happens if you tell them you saw me."

"I don't care," she said, bravery rushing into her heart and warming it to match the rest of her body, pumping with adrenaline. "I used to, but not anymore."

"You have to care, baby," he pushed her hair behind her ear. "Care for the both of us."

"I wanna get out," she whined. He lifted her up, bridal style, and scooped her onto the bed, and she tried to get up, but was defenseless against his weight, so she pawed weakly at his chest instead. "Please, let me out. Bear." The plea in her voice would have whittled away anyone. Anyone but Sean. He was the one person she couldn't bend to her will, the one she couldn't make stay.

"I'll stay until you sleep, my love, and then I'll come back for you." he kissed her forehead, and she felt his weight sink the covers a little bit as she closed her eyes and curled into his side.

"You know you can get out if you want to," he whispered, a nighttime ritual.

"But then I have to give you up," she, half-asleep now, replied back. Loyal to the bitter end, she was. "And I can't do that."

"That's right," he got up, and kissed her on the crown of her head once again. "Good girl. I'll be back tomorrow."

"Sean?" she stretched sleepily, hoping to catch him before he was gone.

"Yes, baby?" he hung back by the doorframe.

"They told me it was your fault I'm still here. Because I'm still holding onto us. Is that true?" her voice wavered.

He hesitated, and she could feel his half-breath lying in wisps in the space between them. She could practically feel its uncertainty radiating off onto her. His jacket rustled as he fiddled with it. "That's preposterous, angel. Don't believe anything they tell you."
