as there is not much of an overview, my friend @Stuck_in_my_Fandoms has 'briefly' summed it up:
Would it be stupid to say spoilers at this point? So. Phil gets abandoned in an orphanage, despite what he has been told, and then makes friends with dan, someone who *apparently* has had no friends since joining. Dan is unlike a lot of the kids there and doesn't really fit in, eventhough he has been there the longest. Phil becomes friends with dan and start sharing their obsessions, one being reading books *cough cough bridge to teribithia* and start playing football together. Dan gets an offer to leave the orphanage and they're all sad and stuff but then their like, wait phil seems cool so he can come too. Then there is like these couple chapters where nothing much happens but they start school and dan gets diagnosed with a whole ton of stuff. TIME SKIP. And everyone hates dan and hes kinda an idiot but then romance drama with phil and this girl idk whom that dan decides to date and(this is where my knowledge gets a bit blurry from reading at 3am) dan is all upset but then dan finds his real mum and hes like phil plz come with me. He gets really upset coz his mum is a prick and smth happens and means dan is v v depressed and I'm not saying the rest coz ive probably given too much away.
