Modern Forests

Ears twitching

I walk through the forest,

Overwhelmed by the humming

Silence of too much noise.

Muscles tensed

Coiled like a loaded spring

Imperceptibly my body shivers

In response to an unseen threat.

There is something in the air.

Cautious now,

I advance into the open space

Hunching low to avoid detection

Naked without the security of the shadows.

Looking down

I feel their eyes on me

Some curious, others predatory

Alone and exposed, they think me vulnerable.

Don't they know?

Fierce hearted,

A wolf does not cower

In the presence of sheep

And I am not one of the herd.
