"Elouse, just tell me if it's a positive or negative ion," Charlie pleads, his golden eyes a touch darker. "C'mon, if you get this right, we can finally go home."

I looked at the sheet of paper again. "Positive," I murmur lowly, hoping it was correct. I mean, its still a 50-50 chance.

"YES!"

Charls leaps in sheer joy, as if I just told him I'd marry him. As if, I thought.

"God, I could kiss you right now," he mutters as he packs up.

I groaned, making a hideous face. "Save that for Penny. Okay, loverboy?"

"Only for you, Eli-cat."

As we walk side by side on the streets, he stops abruptly. I raise my brow and turn to him. "What's wrong?" I inquire curiously.

"Don't you have to go to that pageant dance rehearsal?" Charlie answers thoughtfully.

And then, it clicked.

"Oh, no! Mr Brower is so not going to be happy!"

Grabbing Charlie's wrist on impulse, we run to one of the school's studios.

Once we arrived, everyone else was already there. To my relief, Anna wasn't with Drew; which means I could ask him to be my partner for the group dance and presentation. Brower eyed Charlie and I with an accusatory glare. When I checked the clock, I realized that we held everyone up by a whopping two minutes and thirteen seconds. I was seriously contemplating telling Mr Brower to take a chill pill, but hey, I didn't want him to hate me more.

Letting a signature throat-clearing out, he clapped to get our attentions.

"So glad you could all make it," he chirped enthusiastically. "Today, we have Ms Queen with us to start you off with the basics. You start learning the choreography by next week. I'm assuming you've brought your partners with you, so try your hardest."

Ms Queen stepped forward and gave us a radiant smile. Her beach blonde hair was pulled back in a ballerina bun and her stance was elegant. Straight off the bat, you could tell she was a dancer. A lovely one.

"Hi, I'm Ms Queen and today we might try and see how you go about waltz. The dances revolve around waltz, so it makes sense," she explained with a quick wink. "Don't worry, I'll go easy on you. So, go ahead and pair up. Mr Brower will be going around to write down your partners' names."

And with that, she went to play the song. It was Pull Me Down by Mikky Ekko, which I found pleasant to listen to.

Awkwardly, Charlie and I dropped our bags and left it by the corner of the room. We stood silently, looking speechless. He gulped, slowly raising his hand. I hesitantly took it and we got into position. My left hand was on his shoulder, my right gripped by his. Charlie stared at me, probably unsure of what to do. Of course, Ms Queen didn't let his limp arm go unnoticed. She immediately placed it on my waist in a heartbeat.

From my peripheral vision, I could see Mr Brower inching closer. So, I panicked. I didn't know if I wanted Charlie to be my final partner. A part of me still wanted to take a chance and ask Andrew. Except, this was Charlie. I didn't want to say the wrong things. I didn't want him to take it the wrong way. I just-

"Hello, Miss Walton. Who do we have here?" Mr Brower said as he clicked his pen. "Oh, Mr Fellows, how are you?"

"I'm good, thanks," Charlie replied, breaking away from me so that we could both face our principal.

I knew he was about to write Charlie's name.

So, I gulped, hoping that what I was about to do wasn't another mistake.

"Mr Brower?" I mumbled, my voice just below a whisper.

Both their eyes darted to mine. I willed myself to look at Charlie, and all I felt was this overwhelming guilt. He held my gaze, but his eyes seemed emotionless. His lips were set in a passive smile. I wanted to take my words back, and yet I couldn't. His golden lenses said it all.

He knew.

Charlie knew.

"By proxy...I'm here by proxy, Mr Brower," he stated in a voice void of emotion.

"Oh, for who?"

"I-I don't know yet," I answered shyly.

"Just don't forget to bring him next time, alright? I'll see you, Miss Walton, Mr Fellows."

We remained standing for a while, another silence enveloping the two of us. I wasn't sure what was going through his head, but I didn't understand mine either. I was in a constant battle between feeling guilty and relief. I didn't know what to think; I was just confused - conflicted beyond belief.

Because even as Charlie walked me to my front door...as he left me with a simple goodbye, a voice in the back of my mind told me I made the wrong choice. In the end, I knew that mattered the most is what I believed in. So...

What did I believe in?
