Chapter 25

It was wrong to think that life would just magically fall into place one day. I was crazy enough to believe all the silly clichés life kept feeding me. I absorbed it, took it in, and used it as my motivation. It helped me, but right now I just realised my mistake. All that lying and pretending made me into this big ball of assuming and expecting.

I hated that. I hated that I was acting gloomy and altoge-

"Hey, are you even listening to me?" Charlie grumbled as he rubbed his temples. "Eli, you need to focus. I've been asking you to explain Absolute Zero for the past seven minutes and you didn't even bat an eyelash."

I smiled sheepishly at him, hiding behind my curls. "Don't look at me like that, I was just contemplating life," I reasoned, raising my hands in defence.

"This isn't the time for that, cupcake. Now, shoot because it's the last question for today."

I sighed, but grinned when he mentioned the word last. "Absolute zero, the point where no more heat can be removed from a system. And cupcake? How original."

"Keep going," he urged, gazing at me expectantly as he ignored my unnecessary comment.

"According to the absolute or thermodynamic temperature scale," I finished as I pumped my fist in the air. I nailed it. I am now officially Einstein.

"Not quite." Charlie snickered, shaking his head at me with amusement. His eyes were shimmering in this light, like Edward Cullen's skin when it came in contact with sunlight.

"I said that out loud, didn't I?" He nodded; smirking, of course. "Whatever, I need some air." With that, I packed my bag and headed home.

I gathered some things and decided to make some decorations. It was for Penny and Charlie's hut that Charlie supposedly built for them. I figured I'd burn in hell somewhere for being this deceitful and manipulative, but a deal was a deal. So far, I've made some improvements with my guy skills. I mean, I could talk to them without blurting out specific and embarrassing details. Drew acknowledges my existance, so that's always a good thing. Charlie's end was moving along quite nicely, but mine? He's had one date with Penelope and barely any questions asked and answered. I wanted to speed things along. Two months wasn't very far away. Well, two weeks less than that, which indicates that I now have only six weeks left to get this done. I'm still short on the money - thus, the job search - but I'll get this done. I know I'm a quitter and that I give up on things easily, but not this time. I wanted to help, even if I wasn't completely in love with the idea. Charlie is a good guy and Penny's okay, but I can't help but think that someone is going to get hurt.

Somehow.

I shook my head, muttering incoherent words under my breath. I invited Cindy over, but she said she'll come over after about an hour. They're gardening, her and Mr Fellows. He was a tall man and he looked like this really strong person. Most times when I saw him, he would be kneeling by the garden, trying to take out nasty weeds. Lucky for him, he had a green thumb. I killed a cactus once and I thought that was damn near impossible. It wasn't, I had a before-and-after picture to prove it.

"It's just me again," I whispered to myself with a sigh. I wish we had a pet that I can tell all my secrets to, preferably a dog. "Nothing new there."

Painting the cardboard a light brown color, I listen to the music on the radio. The song was alien to me, but it made me somewhat think about Zeke. It was edgy and it had a rock feel to it. That was exactly him. I quietly laughed to myself, moving on to another piece of cardboard. The next tune had Drew written all over it. It was Baby Blue Eyes by A Rocket to the Moon. I started singing along to it, but was stopped when my phone started ringing. How typical of the universe.
