- I would just really appreciate if you could share some supplies with me. Also I could really use some painkillers. – He nods his head and opens up the cabinet with medicine. He pulls out all of the bottles with painkillers and gives them to me. I can see he is buried in thought, but I'm not sure about what. I grab a bottle of water and swallow two pills. Maybe at least it will numb the pain for a little while.
- How about I help you find your family first? – I hear him say and I'm caught off guard. Help me? Why would he do that? Doesn't he want to find his own family? What does he care about mine? I don't understand him.
- Why would you do that? – I simply ask, because I have no idea why he's doing it. Why?
- Because I'm sure that my friend Shane took care of my family. He had no one else beside us and he would do anything to protect us. Therefore I'm sure that they are safe now. As safe as they can be. – I listen to him closely.
- You would really do that? I don't even know where to look for my daughter. The father's apartment was empty when I searched it. They didn't leave any note.
- Yes, I will help you. You need to lie down for a few days anyways, do you even see in what shape you are? If you leave right now you will die. – I can't argue with that. Painkillers might help numb the pain, but they don't give me any strength. If shit goes bad in the city, I will end up dead. – Meanwhile we will make plans where to search and I will gather supplies from the neighbourhood. We will need ammo and food, there's not much in here, it will only last for a few days.
- I don't know how to thank you, Rick. – I look him in the eyes. I can't believe that he's actually willing to do that. He doesn't even know me, yet he's willing to risk his life to help me find my family. I don't know how will I repay him for that.
- It's fine. Let's go eat something and then you need to get some rest so you can start healing properly. – I don't intend to fight him on that. I go slowly to his kitchen and sit by the table.
- So Rick, what are you serving on this fine day? – I ask him jokingly making him laugh. Smile really looks good on his face. We allow ourselves to forget all our problems for this one evening. And it really feels good.
He grabs two cans of food and puts them on the table.
- A special offer for tonight: baked beans. – I frown in disgust and he laughs again.
- No shit! Seriously? Who the hell buys baked beans? That is disgusting, Rick. I despise your shopping choices. I think I rather starve to death to be honest. – I turn around and decide to drink water instead.
- Hey, it's not that bad! Just try it. – He teases me and tries to put a spoon full of beans in my mouth. Obviously he fails and it all falls on my damn shirt. Just great! – Oops. You should have just eat it. – He shrugs his arms and keeps on emptying his can of beans. It might look hilarious, but we're basically acting like teenagers right now. I guess we kind of needed that to make ourselves feel a little bit better.
- Oh damn you and your beans. You win, Rick. I'm so hungry right now that I can't even say no to this. – I laugh, while I start to chew on baked beans.
- I will try to find canned spaghetti when I go out tomorrow to look for supplies. – He makes a promise and I nod my head.
- I would sell my soul for a spaghetti right now, I'm not joking. – We keep on laughing and making jokes until we finish our food. It got really late and I could feel exshaustion catching up to me. – I think I will go get some sleep. – I say when I get up and head into direction of the couch.
- No, don't sleep on that. It's very uncomfortable, trust me. Take the bed upstairs. – I feel my cheeks burning and I realize that I'm blushing right now. Ugh, way to go Caroline. Way to go. Seriously? Get your shit together!
- I will need your help though, I won't be able to go up these stairs on my own. – He nods his head and after a few seconds he grabs my arm and we slowly make our way upstairs. I lie on the bed and look at his face. – Thanks for everything. Goodnight.
- Goodnight. – I hear him say while he closes the door behind him.
I'm about to go to sleep when I notice a family picture on a night stand. There's Rick, a brown haired woman and a little boy, around 12 years old. They look happy. The picture makes me think of my own family as I fall asleep.
