• The Beginning Of The End

• Chapter I •

- What's going on, officer? – He looks at me with panic on his face and stops filling the car with supplies.

- People... people are turning into monsters. They die and come back to life... and they eat others. – He says in a terrified tone of voice. What he said, it's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. But somehow... the way he said it. The way he believed in what he said... Made me believe him too, no matter how unrealistic it was. – Run. As fast as you can, it's dangerous here in the city. – I turn around to look at my sister. I need her to be safe. And she's not going to be safe with me. Not with what I'm about to do. I take out a small piece of paper and write an address on it. I look the officer in the eyes and hand him the address.

- Please... Please take my sister to this place. I need to go get my daughter and her father. – He looks at the address and nods his head.

- Okay. I can do that, it's on the way that I'm heading anyway. – I hear him reply.

- Thank you! – I turn around and run to my sister. She's devastated, I can see it on her face. I am too. But I hide it, deep inside of me. I can't let emotions get the best of me. I have to be strong for my daughter. – Anne! Annie! – I shake my sister out of the shock. She looks at me with tears in her eyes. She's in denial and I have to burst that bubble. – I need to go get my Sophie, you know that. We'll meet at our brother's cabin. I will get there as fast as I can. I promise. – I make my promise as I hug her tightly.

- I will go with you, we can't seperate now. It's not safe. – She tries to change my mind, but it's not up to discussion.

- It's safer than you going with me. – It's the last words I say. I run to my car and drive away fastly in direction of Luke's apartment. I call him meanwhile, but there's no answer.

- Fuck! – I start punching the wheel of my car while I get stuck in another traffic. This doesn't make any sense, I will get there faster on my own. I open the little cabinet on the right and pull out a gun. I don't usually use it in my work, I'm the investigator, I don't chase murderers, I solve the crimes. But I still had a basic training in how to use a gun. And from what the police officer said to me, I will need a gun. Hopefully not, but you can never be safe enough. I get out of the car while I try to call Luke the second time. This time I hear him pick up.

- Care.. there's something wrong in the city. People are going nuts.. – I hear him say and I start running in direction of his apartment.

- Luke! Where are you?! We need to leave the city. It's not safe here. I'm going to get you! – I yell to the phone eager to get an answer from him.

- I'm... - The signal cuts off and the phone call ends.

- Fuck! This isn't happening! FUCK! – I curse as I try another time, but now there's no signal at all. This scares me. I just realized I lost contact with him. How will I find them? There's a chance they are at his apartment, but they could also try to leave the city. I try to run faster but I keep losing my strength, I keep losing hope...

I reach for my phone again and I start calling my brother. But of course it goes straight to voicemail. Damn him! He can't even answer the damn phone while the world is ending? But I'm not giving up, I decide to leave him a voicemail. – Travis... I don't know if you're gonna hear this, but I need you to take care of Anne. She's headed to your cabin at the lake. I'm not with her. I need to find Luke and Sophie, if I do – I'm gonna meet you both there. I hope... I love you, big brother. – I finish the call as I try to stop the tears falling down my face. I don't know if I will ever see them again. There is so much that can happen now and I'm completely on my own. I gasp when I notice two cars burning on the road. I see some people running around and screaming nonsense. I can feel their fear, I can see how terrified they are. But I also notice the building Luke lives in. I keep running on sidewalk trying to avoid any interactions. Thankfully no one stops me and I reach my destination. I get out the keys to apartment, but I notice the door is open.

- Luke? Sophie? – I call out while entering the flat. I don't hear any response nor I see them anywhere. Although I see a mess. They were here, they were here for the stuff. There are cabinets opened everywhere. I look around to see what they took... clothes, food... I stop next to a cabinet where our family picture used to stand. And I notice that it's gone. He took it. I brush off my tears and try to look for any kind of message from Luke. There's absolutely nothing. I'm so mad at him right now. How could he not leave any message for me? How am I supposed to find them now? How am I supposed to reunite with them? Where should I look for them? I can't just go back to my sister without them. What kind of mother that would make me? I know that Sophie is safe with him, he would do anything to keep her safe. But it doesn't make me feel any better. Where should I keep looking? Luke, where did you go... And then I realised... Luke's brother. That's his only family, that's where he would go. I know it. Okay... now I definetely need a car. His brother's house is few miles away. But where the hell will I get a car now?

I run out to the street, looking around. I see an abandoned car on the middle of the street and this is just too good to be true. It feels suspicious. I walk to it slowly holding gun in my hands. I hear some weird sound, almost like an animal, but not exactly? What the hell? That's when I see it. A woman slowly approaching me. But is it really a woman? Is it even still a person? I try to call her out, but there's no response. Just these mumbled noises that give me creeps all over my body. I don't know what to do, I'm terrified. Should I run? Should I shoot? What if this person is sick and I will kill her? She reaches for my arm, but I pull away causing her to fall. It doesn't stop her, she gets up very slowly and keeps going in my direction. I don't want to shoot, but I need to do something. I run quickly to the car behind her and close the door abruptly. I don't hesitate, I start driving running over the woman. I look in rearview mirror to see what happened to her and I notice she still keeps moving. What the hell is this thing?

I don't notice the car coming at me from the other side. At least not in time to react. I hear a loud bang and I feel how my own car goes straight into one of the buildings. I can't move. The last thing I see before I pass out is my blood dripping on the car's window.

- Help... - I whisper as I can feel darkness overcoming my whole life.
