Cross stayed right by my side as I unlocked the giant double doors, shifting from foot to foot as they slowly opened.

Suddenly the outside world looked a lot more dangerous, and he consequences of what I was about to do were setting in. But that wasn't going to stop me.

I looked at Cross, squeezing his hand slightly. "You ready?"

He nodded, pulling a brace face. "Always."

We walked together, hand in hand down to the gates.

There were no zombies there. The wasteland was empty, no signs of the undead.

I turned to look back at Dust, Killer, Horror and Error one last time and waved goodbye.

They all waved in response. They had been my family, my friends and my protectors. Each of us always helping anyone else out. And now I was leaving them.

I sighed, shaking my head as I turned back and started to walk, Cross quickly following behind me.

"Nightmare..."

"Hm?" I looked down at him.

"When I turn...promise me you'll go back to them...a-and live the rest of your life happily..."

I winced. "You won't turn Cross."

He laughed dryly. "Yes I will...I've probably got only hours left...maybe a day if I'm lucky..."

I pulled him along into the forest before kissing him quickly. "Well then I better spend these last hours wisely, trying to protect the one I love."

Cross blushed and nodded, sighing as he nuzzled me. "I love you..."

I went stiff for some reason at his words, but I quickly relaxed. "I love you too, Crossy..." I whispered.

And this time, I knew I meant it.

He smiled up at me, his eyes sparkling and lively, the complete opposite to the dull glossy ones he had earlier.

"I'm going to find a way to save you..." I murmured, stroking his cheek softly. "I might know a place..."

"A-A place?"

I nodded, hugging him to my chest. "A place where they might be able to cure you..."

Instantly Cross' eyes widened and his grip on me tightened. "A-Are you serious?"

"I don't know for certain, sweetheart...but it's our best shot..."

After that we kept walking, and Cross was noticeably more determined, not looking so tired and ill. My words from earlier must have really empowered him to keep fighting.

We kept walking all day, trekking through the forest.

Surprisingly enough, Cross only had a few small mini episodes where he stumbled or would collapse suddenly.

He'd stay on the floor shaking for about five minutes, but would then return to normal with some help from me, and then we'd be on our way again.

He never had any actually moments of full zombie. He was keeping back the virus better than he ever has before.

But we both know it'll overpower him eventually. He'll turn completely soon, and nothing will be able to bring him back, maybe not even a cure...

Eventually it got dark, and the two of us settled down in a giant hollow tree. It was quite small considering the two of us were in there, but we made it work.

We had a tiny fire just in the middle of the tree, giving us warmth. The entrance was blocked off with a few logs, invade a sudden hoard of zombies came past and saw us as easy prey.

We were each in separate sleeping bags, but we still snuggled up to each other, our skulls pressed together as we watched the fire flicker and crack.

We'd eaten some of our supplies, and drank some water, but otherwise we hadn't needed use anything else...yet.

I sighed, rubbing the top of Cross' skull softly as he rested his head against my chest, purring happily.

"Nighty?"

"Hm?"

"This place..." He shifted, looking up at me. "How do you know it could have a cure?"

I kissed the top of his skull, nuzzling him. "Because I was cured there...kind of..."

Cross blinked curiously, pressing closer to me. "You were bitten?"

I nodded. "Yeah way back near when the apocalypse started...it turned me into this though..."

"This?"

I gestured to my slime and tentacles. "I used to look like a normal skeleton...but they messed up with the cure and turned me into this...sure I didn't turn into a zombie...but at a cost..."

Cross looked up at me in awe, his eyes wide. "So they cured you?"

"I guess so..."

"That's amazing!"

I snickered, kissing his cheek. "Is that so?"

He nodded, wriggling out of his sleeping bag slightly so that he could get closer to me.

I squirmed my top half out of the sleeping bag as well, letting it stay at my waist as I pulled him onto my lap.

He snuggled up to my chest happily, wrapping his arms around the back of my neck as he looked up at me, his eyes full of nothing but love.

I looked back down at him, smirking as I rubbed my thumb over his scar softly.

His face slowly turned a soft shade of purple as I leaned closer to him, kissing his cheek softly. "I love you~"

His face flushed darker as he nodded, smiling. "I-I love you too!"

We slept well that night. Cross was calm and in control for the whole night. But for some reason, that put me on edge...
