Chapter 17: Space Between

Mal and Brelyn rested against the railing of the stairs that led them up to the hideout. There was an awkward silence. Neither one of them knew where to start. There was tension that could easily be seen, and both of them wanted to cut it.

"Mom," Brelyn began, "I-I'm sorry. I shouldn't have-"

Before Brelyn could finish, Mal brought her daughter into a tight hug. Brelyn hugged her mother just as tight before breaking down into tears. "I'm the one who should be sorry. I couldn't believe I didn't notice something that was right under my nose. I should've known there was too much pressure on you. I know how you feel; I can't believe I didn't see it."

"But I never said anything," Brelyn said. "I should have said something."

"You know you can tell me anything," Mal said. Brelyn remained silent. Mal then began to sing.

I know exactly what you

Are going through

But I thought that you were fine

Why did you have to hide

Brelyn joined in shortly after.

I didn't want to let you down

But the truth is out

It's tearing me apart

Not listening to my heart

I really had to go

Mal:

And I would never stop you

Brelyn:

Even though we've changed

Mal:

Nothing has to change

Both:

Brelyn:

Nothing can stay the same

It's growing pains

Mal:

Be proud of all the scars

They make you who you are

Brelyn:

Mal:

Brelyn:

Even though it changed

Both:

Brelyn:

Mal:

I know you have to find your place

Brelyn:

But this is not the end

Mal:

Brelyn:

We can meet in the space between

After they finished singing to each other, they embraced each other. Even though they came from two completely different worlds, they were going to make it work.

AN: Hey, so, updates are going to be a little slower since I started school last week. This year, I'm a senior, so I really have to work hard.
