My hands drip with blood and sweat and I pull myself up the creaky ladder. I can feel the calluses on my hands breaking open over the rusty metal. My old backpack, filled with only the essentials for bounces on my back with every step, and my muscles ache.
I haven't rested well in weeks.
The wind blows my hair in my eyes and temporarily blinds me. I reach the last prong on the ladder and let out a sigh in relief, stepping onto the roof.
I look down at the city below me and smile.
New York is so beautiful.
As I think that, immediately after, I imagine my grandfather saying, "don't be a pansy."
I disregard the thought of him and sit down on the cold, wet roof. I open my pack and take out a sandwich.
I enjoy it in peace and take in the city sounds.
It's officially been one week since I ran away from home. But, let me get something straight. I didn't run away because my life was "too hard". My family was in some deep shit and the only chance I had at surviving was to run away. It sounds selfish, leaving my family behind, but the only person left alive was my father and they got to him. He told me to save myself and try to live a normal life but I took practically no money with me. All of the family's money is in savings and I have no form of ID to get any of it.
No one knows where I went so I've been alone. But it's given me time to think about myself and what I really want in like. Even though I most likely will never achieve my dreams. Not on the run like this.
I hear a thud behind me and turn around in curiosity, but mostly fear.
I see a shadow of a man, but that's the last thing I can remember.
