XIV ~ Returning The Favor

Start from the beginning

Pointing a gun at his own head.

"Gerard!" I yelled while running to him. I tackled him to the ground, causing him to drop the gun. My hands were in a death grip around Gerard's wrists on the pavement. He looked up at me with scared, yet broken eyes. There were tears streaming down both sides of his cheeks. "What the hell are you doing?" I tried yelling but it only came out as a whisper. Gerard was still looking up at me with the same expression.

"I can't live with needing drugs and alcohol to feel like myself." Gerard cried. Now it was my turn to be silent. I just stared down at him in utter shock that my best friend would try to kill himself. Wow, the tables really have turned.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Is all I managed to say. Gerard took a deep breath, trying to calm down his crying to form words.

"I didn't want you to worry about me. It would be better with me gone." Gerard sighed. 'I would be better with me gone'. That felt like a kick to the gut.

"It would be hell with you gone. Mikey would be absolutely devastated. I would be devastated. Everyone would Gee." I could feel the tears now start coming down my face as well.

"I don't deserve to be alive." Really? I'd call him a hypocrite if he didn't just try to kill himself.

"Yes you do. Because no one deserves to have their life taken from them. Remember Gerard? Those are the exact words you said to me when you saved my life." Gerard looked surprised.

"You remember what I said?"

"Of course I do. Your words saved my life Gee." We both sat there silently after I said that. Deciding I've had enough, I stood up and reached for his hand.

"Come on." I said while waiting for him to take my hand.

"Where are we going?" Gee sat up but didn't take my hand.

"For a walk." I smiled. He looked at me confused. He hesitantly took my hand. I pulled him up but didn't let go of his hand. I wanted to make sure he felt safe and secure. Gerard looked at me for a second before pulling me into a tight embrace. He finally fully broke into my shoulder. Gerard cried harder than ever and practically fell into my arms. I held him as tight as I could and rubbed his back.

"I've got you Gee.... Let it all out........ I promise you'll be okay." I whispered small things here and there to comfort him. Gerard cried. and cried. and cried. Then cried some more. He was finally at his breaking point. This poor boy couldn't handle anything else anymore so he felt like he needed to kill himself.

Gerard's crying finally calmed down after about ten minutes. He took one final deep breath and let go of me. His face was all read and puffy. To add to that, he looked tired, broken, and hopeless. I wiped a few tears left of his cheeks and started walking forward to the side walk, still holding onto his hand. I looked down at my phone to see what was around. On maps, it says there's a park not far from here so we can walk there. I put my phone back into my pocket after studying where to go.

I could feel Gerard's stare on me. I looked up at him. He was definitely calmer, but looked more stressed.

"Is there anything on your mind you need to get out? There's no point in hiding anything from me at this point Gee." I said while I rubbed small circles on the back of his hand.

"Why do you care so much about me?" Gee asked.

"Well for one, you're the only reason I'm still alive right now." I laughed. Gee chuckled a bit but I knew it was forced. "Gee, you gave me a chance when no one else would. Anyone else in my past wouldn't even bat an eye at me running in front of a car. They'd just watch. You showed me that not everyone in this world is bad."
