Having studied Zarry on and off for years, here's how I think they came to be romantically and sexually linked.

At the start I think Harry (the middle class boy from Cheshire) was a bit wary of Zayn, who came from a very different background (working class, half Pakistani, Muslim, from a tight-knit community in Bradford. Remember, Zayn had never even seen a plane before joining 1D, much less flown in one. Despite this, he was definitely more streetwise than Harry but his macho side was balanced by his incredible beauty and his obvious pride in his appearance – remember the Zayn is vain thing?)

At this time, Harry was noticeably closest to Louis and this is when Larry Stylinson became a thing. My view of Larry is that it may have been real for a time (and they are / were very close friends) but that it was largely a joke, although Louis is very possessive of Harry and may I suspect have been in love with him. I knew Harry would never end up with Louis because I saw no tension between them. They were comfortable together – laughing and joking - as best friends are. It is my belief that we aren't relaxed and comfortable around people we have a crush on – we are nervous and on edge, which turns to a kind of hyperactive elation when our crush gives us the right kind of attention.

When Zarry interacted, it became increasingly obvious they were fascinated by each other, although suppressing it like crazy. This occasionally led to fallouts and arguments. Their level of eye contact was always different to that between other members of the band. Harry always behaved differently to Zayn than he did to the other band members. He would watch him for long periods of time, as if waiting for something (Zayn even refers to this in one of his songs). Harry would stop "performing", stop doing "Harry Styles", because when he looked at Zayn everything else fell away.

From what I know from news at the time (and now, their song lyrics) they partied a lot together over 2012 and 2013. They flirted like mad, as we all know, on the Take Me Home tour. But as Zayn's lyrics reveal, and as we suspected, it wasn't just a joke... and at some point, probably wasted and ending up in each other's room, the flirting gave way to something else.... and at some point – Zayn tells us – (he TELLS US!!!!, OH, THANK THE LORD sorry I still can't get over it) - they fell in love. How and where he tells us, I will reveal in a later chapter.

I can't really work out exactly when they crossed over from being friends to being lovers (it's not my business anyway), but I think it happened at some point in 2013.

There was then a problem. I'm not sure what happened but they stopped interacting and the engagement (Zerrie) happened soon after (August 2013). The two things were probably linked. There is a suggestion in the lyrics that Zayn was asking for more from Harry, and Harry wasn't prepared to give it. Whether this means more in the bedroom, or more emotionally, or in the sense of commitment, I don't know. Anyway, Zayn turned somewhere else. What is clear is that Harry was sore for a long time about Zayn's public statement of commitment to Zerrie.

It seems, however, that Zarry got back together in 2014 (despite the engagement, which was looking increasingly fake, with no details emerging about dates or arrangements).

At some point (I think it was at this point) their relationship became (ahem) very, very, very sexual. Again, not our business to know what really went on BUT Zayn's lyrics are SHOCKINGLY revealing when you know how the code works. The SS Zarry thanks you, Zayn!! Harry is noticeably more coy about this (but is becoming more and more open in his live performances).

It is clear that they were infatuated with each other and remain obsessed with each other. A Romeo and Juliet level of love. Not surprising, I guess, when you think how much they had to hide and how difficult it is for them to be together openly.

As (my fictional) Zayn says to Harry in Deep: "you always want what you can't have".
