Dancing Through the Rain

Kids in the backyard
playing games with one another,
excited after their graduation.
The night slowly comes to an end.

My brother jumps up
and down excited and energetic,
so happy to enjoy summer,
and the fact that elementary school is over.

My mother spinning madly
all around curls bouncing while she smiles
sadly-, the sun gone down,
her babies are growing up.

The rain starts in a thunderous surprise.
We dance.
Our clothes stick to our skin and the air is thick
but we stick to our lives.

The music blares in our ears
and we dance like the world is ending.
Smiles play upon our lips
as we wave our hands
and swing our hip.

The fresh rain that refuses to stop
beating harder and harder against the sidewalk,
mimicking my heart pounding
beneath my rib cage.
Threatening to break out, like mad man in jail

The thought of middle school terrified me,
because time was moving like day turns to night,
and I was growing up too fast...
