"What?! You got us all a detention for tomorrow?!"

"Calm it Charlie, I was joking." Charlie lets out a big sigh and wipes her forehead in the universal signal of 'thank goodness.'. I smirk. "Or not."

"WHAT?!!! Callie!"

"Yeah I'm not joking. Sorry, it's tomorrow."

"I cannot believe this, you are the biggest let down on the entire earth!"

"I'm sorry, might be fun though."

"How many detentions have you attended?"

"Erm, one."

"What?!"

"What do you mean what?"

"You do not act like a person who has only ever got one detention." Charlie looks completely amazed.

I smile sadly. "Well before my parents died I was a goody-two shoes, I always worked hard to get top marks in everything, and afterwards, well That was when I changed and I also became home-schooled so I didn't really have a chance to get any."

"Oh Callie I'm so sorry!" Charlie looks so apologetic.

"No don't worry, it's fine, it's been a while so it's ok." I smile, all teeth and no truth. It will never be ok, they're gone and I will never stop missing them, or blaming myself because it is my fault that they died.

"Still, I'm really sorry."

"No problem. So hey who wants to go down for supper." I quickly change the subject, the usual mental collapse I experience when I think too much about them is coming my way.

"What the hell is 'supper'? It sounds so boring." Charlie looks disgusted.

"Charlie. Do you want to go down and eat?"

"Yes! Food please!"

—————

"Come on Charlie! Let's go sit with them!" I point to Toby and Hunter's table.

"No way! That's the cool table, you have to get an invitation to sit there."

"Like a permission slip? Or is a letter better?"

"Callie!" Charlie glares at me, however her voice attracts attention.

"Callie!" Hunter smiles widely and beside me Charlie stiffens. "Come sit with us, your friend can come too!"

"Cool! Can I get a signature with proof that I'm allowed to sit there please?" Charlie elbows me in the stomach. "Alright child! Calm down, we'll sit with them! I know how excited you are but please keep it toned down a little." This time the elbow comes a lot harder. "That's gotta bruise." I wheeze.

"Come on Callie!" Hunter calls and I notice how quiet the rest of the hall is, obviously this is an unusual occurrence.

"And I thought I had to go to an old persons home to find people more interested in other's lives than their own, but apparently we all age really quickly at this school! Stop staring! You're making me nervous." I shout at the school, then I jump into the seat next to Toby, leaving the seat next to Hunter free. "Come on Charlie it's not that hard. Sit down next to Hunter." I motion for her to sit and slowly she does, blushing hard.

"Hi! You must be Charlie, it's nice to meet you!" Hunter smiles at her.

"Hi." Charlie whispers in the tiniest voice I'd ever heard.

"And I thought only people who were homeschooled were meant to be socially awkward. Speak up Charlie, you're never quiet." Charlie blushes and I roll my eyes.
