i know you're not an artist

but somehow

the scribbles at the back

of your notebook

seem more beautiful

than a Picasso

my art teacher used to say "art is emotion". the way the paintbrush presses onto the canvas, sometimes with the softness of a feather, while pressing itself like a brick against it at others. the rush of exhilaration you feel while placing your pencil against a white, blank sheet of paper for the first time. but art isn't just a perfect stance of ballet or the perfect scheme of colour. it isn't just the perfect melody or the perfect poem. it's also haltering, uneven steps. it's an uneven line. a blotch of colour. a slightly off-key tune. an off-putting mix of words. art is baby steps. it is the scribble at the back of the notebook and the paintings of Picasso. for art is not some complicated whirlpool that can only be understood by an expert. art is the simplest form of expression of emotion - for it is emotion itself.
