"Run Rabbit Run"
by Flanagan and Allen(this song is apart of the chapter/story)
***********
As he ran for his life, his feet sinking into the deep snow, the rabid beast leaped into action, it's eyes narrowing onto him, the spin-chilling snarls from the creature pushing his adrenaline even further.
I looked over to my fiance's soon to be murderer, a sinister grin was plastered across his face as he began loading shells into the rifle. This couldn't be real, right? This all seemed too fucked up to be real.
Quickly turning my attention back onto Jace, the dog was even closer than before. Jace began to yell out gibberish as he felt his end closing in.
"Ahhhh!" He screamed as the dog tackled him down by the shoulder, it's sharp teeth piercing through his flesh.
"No!" I cried; all I could do was watch as the man I loved was being mauled to death.
I could do nothing to save him as his blood splattered across the white snow and screams echoed through the trees.
"Hmm. This is getting quite boring." Taehyung muttered, pulling out an old pocket radio from his jacket and switching on an eerie song.
I tried running towards the stairs in hopes of helping Jace, thinking maybe I could distract the dog as Jace made his escape. But when I tried, Taehyung quickly dropped the radio and wrapped his arms around my waist, forcefully pulling me back to him.
"Mai, darling," he growled in my ear, "should I aim for the head or the heart? I think the head would create more of an explosion but the heart has such poetic irony to it, don't you think?"
Tears had already drenched my cheeks at the sight of all this. I thought about pleading to Taehyung to stop Rex from killing Jace, but the damage had already been done at this point, and there was no way Taehyung would change his mind now. He gripped my chin and turned my head towards Jace, forcing me to watch.
"It's your choice my love. Give the word and I'll end his suffering right now, or, watch as he gets ripped apart."
"Please- don't-" I whimpered.
"Which is it Mai? The head or heart?"
All I could hear was Jace's screams as the burning infection engulfed his body, struggling desperately to get away from the rabid dog. He was in so much pain; in so much fear. This young man, called to become an officer of the law, a man who's desire was to serve and protect others from injustice and harm, a man that loved me with the most kind and gentle heart I've ever known didn't deserve a fate like this; and it's all because of me.
"Heart." I whispered sorrowfi, unable to watch as Taehyung stood to his feet and reached for the gun.
"Uggghhhh. That's no fun, but I'll do it for you, since you asked so nicely." Taehyung proceeded, picking up the weapon.
He pressed it against his shoulder and he brought the scope up to his eye. None of this seemed to even phase him, in fact, it was as if he was excited to kill Jace.
"Run rabbit~ run rabbit~ run, run, run~" He sang along as he adjusted the scope, making sure everything felt comfortable. "Bang, bang, bang, goes the farmer's gun~ run rabbit~ run rabbit~ run, run, run."
It was then that the dreaded, piercing noise of the rifle shot rang inside my skull- and I watched my beloved fiance become lifeless in the distance, the rabid dog still gnawing on his forearm.
I fell to my hands and knees, denial flooding every inch of me. Wa-was he really gone? Was that really how he died?
Died. Dead. Death. That was something that was supposed to happen when we were both 90-something, sitting in squeaky rocking chairs and drinking bitter black coffee together on our front porch. It was never supposed to end like this.
"Huh. Thought he'd give up more of a fight. How boring." Taehyung huffed. "Alright Rexy boy, time for you to visit the doghouse in the sky too." And with a bang and a quick whimper, Rex's corpse fell on top of Jace, both their bodies beginning to grow cold.
Taehyung sat the rifle down and came over to me, gently pulling me into his lap, cradling me in his arms. As he hushed in my ear and told me that this was for the best, I came to the conclusion that I was the epitome of nothing. I had no emotion, for my eyes had been drained too dry to afford anymore tears; my body and mind felt like an empty balloon in which no amount of energy or alertness could course. I was just a thing. I had no future that was mine to create and no love that was mine to feel. Everything I've ever known had been brutality ripped away from me, and now I was left with nothing.
"I know this is hard, sweetheart, but I can assure it was for our own happiness. I mean, how were we supposed to live and be happy with such heavy baggage?" Taehyung said, hugging me tighter. "Now, let's head on home before you catch a cold."
