The warm air crept through the wood, signaling the start of the hunting season, which meant she was free from the furs of the dears killed just four moons ago.

The ice had begun to melt, and the rabbits were already leaving their burrows. She had already blessed Irik, her second in command, and his mate the permission to have pups. She could not have pups with these wolves, it did not matter, she did not want a mate.

In any other pack, her position would have been challenged for such behavior as her wolves explained, but she was superior in size and abilities.

They would not dare.

Her pack was growing restless, the promise of warm weather made them eager to hunt again.

She heard strange noises towards the mountains, the low barks and growls of  creatures, followed by the higher calls of their masters. Her bones cracked and shifted, within moments she was her wolf.

Her females heavy with pups, and ones nursing fled to the den, while her males and unmated females flanked to her sides.

The wolf like animals came first, small, and obnoxious. They spoke the same language as her wolves, trying to be menacing, but failed. Their masters came next, that was when she attacked, taking two down as one loaded its weapon.

A cry behind her signaled the fall of a packmate. She made her wolves fall back to the den to protect the others, they took their commrade with them.

A tall, two-leg aimed its weapon at her, she lunged, crushing the foul tasting thing in her jaws before clamping on to the throat of the two-leg before her, killing it.

She shifted back to her two-leg form. A gasp came from behind her. One of the two-legs had stayed his ground. She walked up to him. He reaked of fear.

The two-leg was trying to communicate, but she understood none of what he was saying, she grabbed him by his neck, and dragged him to the edge of her territory before throwing him out, warning him to never come back.

Her wolf that had fallen was a strong male, one of her top wolves.

Her pack sat in a vigil that night, howling in anguish.
