It had been a week since I had met Jake at the club and for some reason I can't get him off my mind. My phone sat in my lap, the number he had written on my hand now typed on it's screen, daring me to press the dial button.
Shifting my seat on my bed, I pulled my blankets up higher. Taking a deep breath, I hit dial.
My heart was in my chest as the first two rings became three.
I found that people who picked up on the third ring had a purpose in life and so when Jake did I nearly threw my phone across the room when I heard his voice.
"Elina." God. His voice sounded even deeper during a call and I nearly sighed in awe.
Gathering my courage I answered him, "Guess you really were expecting my call, huh?"
I heard Jake chuckle and in my head I could vision him doing so. "If I'm able keep my promises, I expect others to do the same."
"That's understandable." I answered.
"It's common courtesy really. Treat people the way you want to be treated, right?" Jake replied.
"Yeah, exactly." The pause that followed felt awkward.
Another moment went past before Jake cleared his throat. "So," he said. "How was work today? Did anything interesting happen with your ex boyfriends, grandfather's son?"
"Ex boyfriends grandfather's son?" I asked slowly.
"Mmhm." Jake mused. "Or as most people would say, your ex boyfriends father who you work for as his secretary."
I frowned. "I don't work for my ex boyfriends father..."
"Sure?" Jake asked. "That's what you said on Saturday when we met."
When we met. Suddenly it came back to me and I groaned loudly. "Please tell me I didn't say that."
Jakes laugh filled the line. "You did, sorry to say."
"I would never work for my ex boyfriends family, ever." I grumbled. "I'll have you know Saturday night I was drunk."
Jake sounded interested. "That so?"
"Yes." I agrued. "My friends kept buying me strong drinks, and I was beinging to get a headache."
"Whatever you say, Tiaree." Jake said, unconvinced.
"Don't patronize me." I narrowed my eyes picturing Jakes smug smile.
"Alright, alright." Another pause. "Sorry, Elina."
I shook my head. "Forgiven, but not forgotten, Jake." I said gruffly.
There was a rustling sound before Jake spoke again. "Okay. You're a secretary, yes? But you don't work for your ex boyfriends family?"
"Yeah? What's this got to do with anything?" I asked, skeptical.
"I'm just asking."
"Asking?" I mused. "More like interrogation."
Jake laughed again. "I could do that too, Elina."
I laughed. "Don't even think about it, buster."
"Okay." Jake said before whispering, "not like I haven't done a background check anyway."
"Hey!" I growled.
Jake's chuckled. "Don't tempt me."
"Oh, I won't, Jakey." I said sweetly, remembering the nickname his friend called him.
Hearing Jake mutter, "I'm going to kill Cory." I couldn't help not snicker.
"Background check, you say?" Jake responded, teasingly.
"Won't find anything, anyway." I told him.
