Jane
As the weeks passed, Jane grew more confident and less zombie like.
Losing her mother was one of the hardest things she had ever gone through, but just as she coped with anything life had decided to throw at her suddenly, she coped with her mother's death.
Soon, her and Lilac's meetings became regular. Every day at the same time they'd meet at the coffee shop, sometimes they'd discuss books, Lilac's hometown, and others, themselves.
Unlike the girls that Jane went to school with, Lilac was bold and outspoken, though she rarely spoke of her family as a whole and their lifestyle. It surprised her that Lilac had taken an interest in her.
Most people, apart from Chase and her father, would ignore her and leave her to her own devices, not that it bothered her that much. Suddenly having Lilac in her life made worth while.
Jane didn't try and deny the burst of happiness within her chest every time she saw Lilac's bright blue hair through the coffee shop window when they met.
Her steps soon became more light as she started to smiled more, surprising the kids in her classes as she normally kept a straight face and her head down.
Her father even noticed Janes change in mood and would often give her curious looks if she passed him in the hall of their two bedroom bungalow, wondering if her daughter had been replaced with someone else.
Could meeting Lilac be the start of a positive change in Jane's life?
Ever since her mother's death, Jane retreated into her shell and became closed off, never exposing herself more than what she needed too.
To her, Lilac was like a breath of fresh air, something new that Jane realized she didn't want to lose just yet. Even if it just a friendship.
One by one, the weeks disappeared and a month went by. It was clear that the girls friendship was growing stronger, even Chase noticed it.
"Girls," The blonde said, her hands going behind her to untie her apron.
Only then did the two notice the peaceful quietness that surrounded them. Both Jane and Lilac looked up sheepishly, startled by Chase's presence.
They bumped shoulders as they went to stand, hands flying out to steady each other, their cheeks red with embarrassment.
Amusement flashed in Chase's eyes as she watched the scene.
Over the weeks during their time in the coffee shop they'd sit together closely, shoulder to shoulder, one hand each gripping the book either would have had picked up after a trip to the library, often missing the stream of customers dying off as the cafe closed for the night.
When Lilac chuckled Jane smiled, suddenly mesmerized by the action.
Her heart beat faltered briefly. What did that mean?
Jane wondered this as she grabbed her gloves, pushed her chair in and thanked Chase for reminding them it was time to leave.
Lilac gave a nod towards Chase, who, as always, kindly held the door open for the pair to pass through.
The girls shuddered as an icy blast of wind hit them reminding them that winter was still around.
Looking up and down the street, they looked at each as if to ask, where to now?
Jane shoved her hands into her jacket pockets, watching the cars pass by.
"When do you have to be home?" she asked, glancing at her friend.
Lilac sighed. "In an hour."
"Library?" Jane offered, breathing in the cold air..
Flashing Jane a grin, Lilac rubbed her hands together. "Sounds better than out here."
Jane smirked. "Come on."
