DeathWish hummed stiffly to himself, gazing into a small talon-held silver mirror.
It had been a small gift from his mate, whom ironical also shared her name and tribe with one student of the school, Scorch. He tsked lightly, he had once joked about how it'd be interesting to see how things would go if this happened instead of that, and Scorch had made this mirror just for that. It was fun for awhile, but it made him nervous to think about now. It never showed anything of what would happen, just what would've. Like how he was currently watching an image of himself and Scorch playing with their dragonet, StarWish. This was from a world where ShadowStep, a shudder of anger ran through his mind, had never tried to kill off the Nightwings. He would have been happy, staying with his family, though strangest of all he would've been hatched over 200 years ago in that world.
He sighed, almost wistfully, ever since that day when Mercy had found that ruby, things seemed off. Everything was tense, that ruby should've been destroyed but now it merely stayed in the classroom like a prisoner. He growled to himself, he hated it. He edged towards his desk, talon hovering over the drawer before he flinched back as if burned.
He turned away and gazed back at the mirror, he always kept it with him, though being an ex-assassin he was used to hiding things so no one noticed it on him. He ran a claw over the mirror's edge before sitting down, sighing as thoughts of the ruby vanished from mind. StarWish looked so happy, giggling about some new friend he'd made, while he and Scorch had their wings draped over each other lovingly. No magic ran through their blood in that world, but the joy made up for it. In this one, it seemed the opposite. A sharp jab of pain hit him as he realized how long it had been since he heard his son laugh, or twined tails with his mate. He gazed back, now pained, and watched the mirror silently.
"If only," he raised his snout and stood up. He was going to do some research he decided. Slowly, almost regretting it, he cleared the image from the mirror with the same word that had made it appear it (his son's name of course), placed the mirror under a hidden bag along his wing, and then he vanished in a plume of smoke from the classroom.
He never realized that the ruby wasn't in that drawer, not until it was too late.
