Three Years Ago
“I’m going to kill you Tommy! It’s two a.m, I don’t want to go to the park!” I exclaimed, as my boyfriend Tommy tried to convince me to meet him.
“No.” I laughed into the phone.
“What if I had sour skittles?” I instantly perked up. Sour Skittles were my favourite thing in the world.
“You’re truly evil. I’ll be there in twenty minutes.” He said goodbye and hung up, as I picked out some jeans and grabbed my sneakers. As much as I loved Tommy, he always called me in the middle of the night to hang out, and I needed my sleep.
I opened my window and stepped onto the branch of the old oak tree. Carefully, I manoeuvred my way to the base of the tree, crossing over into my neighbours yard. They didn’t have half the security we did. Cautiously, I opened their gate and sprinted to Redwood Park.
I ran through the road of fancy houses and mansions, taking them all in. I was grateful that we had money, but people treated me differently. Luckily, most of them didn’t know my family was very rich; I lied about my address and siblings. Only Tommy knew my true identity.
I told him the same day that I also had a photographic memory for words and pictures. The look on his face was priceless when I told him how I could memorize anything.
I arrived at the park, looking for Tommy, but found no one. Rolling my eyes, I jumped on top of the low monkey bars, and patiently waited. Leave it up to Tommy to be late.
“He said that he’d meet us here.” I heard a voice say. Quickly, I jumped down and hid under a nearby wooden bench.
“Yeah, but he’s always late. Cole, how much are we giving him?” The voices were very close to me now. They sounded like college kids.
“Twenty grand.” My face paled, I knew that voice. Cole Li, he graduated from high school when I was in middle school. He used to come over to my house, my sister Annie dated him. But now he ran the Scorpions, a terrifying gang. I was really in trouble now. The Scorpions were known to harass anyone they came across and steal from unsuspecting people. I was watching a Scorpion drug deal or something.
“Evening.” I heard another voice, Tommy? I couldn’t see anything.
“Good evening.” Cole snapped. “Where is she?” She?
“I told her to be here five minutes ago.” No! Tommy was talking about me! Twenty grand? He was going to sell me off to the Scorpions?
“We can wait. Carter’s going to be so mad that I got a snapper before him, I know he wanted her. We can sign the contract now, though.” Contract?
“All right. Her full name is Jessica Terryn Richardson, she’s fifteen. Family history? She’s the youngest, she’s got three older siblings: Simon, Macy and Annie. She’s a snapper, a code red. ” What did that mean?
“Why don’t you call her, see where she is?” Cole asked and I paled. I shoved my hand into my pocket, desperate to pull out my phone before-
“ICE ICE BABY.” My phone shrieked. I yelped as I was pulled out from underneath the bench, and thrown to the ground.
“So this is the little snapper? I remember you, Annie’s sister. The quiet one.” Cole hadn’t really changed. He still had jet-black hair, and eyes that were as dark as night.
“What do you want with me?” I snarled at him, as Tommy helped me up.
“Don’t touch me.” I growled at him, pushing him away. “Do you want money? We have a lot!” Cole shook his head as I backed away from him, straight into someone. They grabbed my shoulders, steadying me.
