Chapter 1

The day after my sixteenth birthday I went to pick up my best friend, Sean Beamin, so we could go for a drive. My dad had just given me his two year old BMW and I was anxious to drive it around. I didn't care where I

went; I just wanted to go somewhere. Ever since I'd passed my driver's test, the need to be on the road was almost overwhelming. If I had a girlfriend, I would have taken her, but I didn't have one. And to listen to the girls at school, none of them could figure out why. I'd never really gone out with anyone, didn't want to. I'd done the group thing a few times, but no one reallyappealed to me. Maybe I was just picky.

I rang the bell at Sean's house. He lived close to the private college in town, in one of those old, historic houses. It had been remodeled, but it still wasn't modern like my house. My mom said the Beamin house had lots of charm and character, whatever that means, and she loved it. I wondered if there were secret passages, but had never asked. When I was younger, and would come over, I used to beg to play hide and seek, but Sean and his sister, Emily, would roll their eyes at me and say no.

"Hey," Sean opened the door. He was about as tall as me, and I'm six-two. His hair was lighter than my dark brown, and he was dressed in his normal shorts and tshirt.

"You ready?" I asked him.

"Yeah, I just need to go tell Emily we're leaving," he walked away and left thedoor open so I could follow him.

Sean led the way to the kitchen. He opened the back door, and I stood inside as he walked out to where his sister was. She was just fourtee

n months younger than him, and he lorded that fact over her to the point where they fought a lot. It was kind of odd for me, I have an older sister that I get along with decently, but I love my little brother. He's cool,

and I'd say that he's one of my best friends.

"Hey, Nate's here, and we're going to head out now," I heard Sean tell Emily.

She was laying on a blanket under this tree in the back yard

and was reading. The girl might have been a little crazy. She was wearing black shorts, a black tshirt, and even had on knee socks in the humid June heat. Honestly, I loved the way she dressed. We went to a private school, and had to wear uniforms, but Emily pushed it a bit by wearing

these crazy socks and Converse high tops with her uniforms. I remember her saying that she thought the socks clashed nicely with the plaid skirt

she was forced to wear. Sean told me that she'd been called into the office, and their father, a high powered lawyer, had gone in and dealt with it. Whatever he said, Emily got to keep dressing like she did.

Now, the day before at my birthday party, I would have told you she was a

beautiful girl, and she was, but today, it was like I was seeing her through new eyes. She was rather tall, had this long, wavy light brown hair a

nd blue eyes that always reminded me of a clear summer day. It kind of freaked me out a bit when I looked at Sean and saw the same eyes, but today, the day after my birthday, I felt something that I'd never felt

before. Ever: attraction. It was so strong I wanted to tell Sean we weren't going anywhere because I wanted to sit out there under that tree with Emily.

My friends had been dating since like freshman year. Sean had a girlfriend and some times gave me a hard time about not going out with anyone. Well, I would get my nerve up and ask him if I could go out with Emily.

While I was realizing how I now felt, she pushed herself up and sat back so she could see around Sean. Emily smiled and waved at me. Her s

mile lights up her face and goes all the way to her eyes. She had her hair all piled up on top of her head, she had something she called the way she had her hair today and Icouldn't remember what it was, but she looked gorgeous. I waved back at her, then she laid back down. I ran a hand
