A/N- short chapter today due to my insane writers block that won't go away... I know exactly where I want the story to end now, but getting there is proving to be a struggle. We'll get there eventually

Also if you're up to date with the manga you might recognise something in this chapter ;)

Upon our approach Levi stared through me with his cold grey eyes, he seemed tense, blatantly pissed off by my choice to ride here alone. But when I flashed my genuine smile to him as we joined the mass of horses, his eyes softened and I thought for a second I caught him smiling back at me.

"You could be put to death for desertion, you know."

Hearing his voice made my heart beat faster and left a tingle in my stomach.  It felt like so long since I had last heard that voice. I merely grinned at Levi's blunt words,  squeezing Eren's arm again  comfortingly and craning my neck in search of Mikasa while I answer him.

I can't believe we pulled this off.

"Those are the first words you grace your prized subordinate with upon her successful return? Besides, while Captain Hanji was knocked out she spoke in her sleep and told me to go after Eren, I could never go against an order. "

Levi raised an eyebrow at me. God, I'd missed him so much.

"Is that a fact? I'd say disobeying orders is exactly something a defiant brat like you would do."

Mikasa caught my eye across the left flank. Unsurprisingly she already had her eyes trained to Eren, attempting to seek out any injury he might have picked up. I nodded her way in acknowledgment.

It's not over yet though...

"You have become obedient, Captain Levi."

Flashing a last faint smirk towards his frowning face, I snapped the reigns again and went to Mikasa. Levi's eyes followed me, wondering what I would do next.

Normally I would not have been so cheeky to my beloved Captain, but having still been riding the high feeling in my body after my suicide mission, I couldn't quite help myself.

"Eren. Are you hurt?"

I focused my gaze back to Ymir while Mikasa questioned and inspected Eren, much to his disapproval. Ymir was nimble in titan form, but not as fast in sprint as the Armoured. She would need my help soon.

My face stiffened once again, a deep breath of crisp air filled my lungs and I glanced around at my comrades,  some of whom were missing. I couldn't see Jean, Connie or Sasha anywhere.

"Eren, get on the horse with Mikasa."

I couldn't help but wonder where the rest of the Scouts were, possibly still at HQ? Did this mission not even warrant the presence of Commander Erwin?

"What? But why?"

Erens voice seemed to shake a little upon hearing my sudden serious tone. I slowed my horse and Mikasa followed suit, finally releasing Erens tanned arm from my fingertips I turned in the saddle to face him.

"You'll be safe with Mikasa, I have no doubt about that. Do not return to the battle, Eren. Go."

A worried glint shone through his beautiful teal eyes, and I realised I'd do just about anything to keep him safe. I loved Eren, he was as precious to me as if he shared my own blood.

After a few moments of silence Eren shuffled in the saddle and placed his foot over to the stirrup of Mikasa's horse. Once he was fully mounted, he glanced at me again and I couldn't help but smile a little.

"Don't worry so much."

My horse charged again, leaving them behind. While Ymir, the Armoured and other titans ran towards us from the North, the Scouts were galloping East. It seemed an attempt to avoid the confrontation entirely.

I broke away from the pack and earned a flurry of glances and curse filled shouts towards my insolence.

Not as soon as I'd separated them by 50 metres, the sound of another horse was heard cantering towards my own. I expected to see him next to me, and when I turned my head I met the cold grey eyes that had changed my whole world.

"Turn back, brat."

Levi's eyes never left mine, and i found myself having to take a deep breath. When I attempted to break his stare I received a swift backhanded slap to my shoulder. I kept his gaze again.

"I won't abandon Ymir. I owe her more than that."

"Do you not owe me more than marching yourself into slaughter?"

My eyes widened. Levi's raised voice revealed more than just anger, he felt betrayed by me. If I were to leave him, as I have promised a thousand times over I wouldn't, what would be of Levi then?

"I'll come back to you, I swear."

"As your Captain, I am ordering you to turn back. You know nothing of our situation, do not ride out there alone like some heroic fool."

I grit my teeth, since I gave myself to Levi, he rarely gave me orders as my Captain. His frustrated glare told me more than his words could, this was his last attempt to make me stay.

I...

I'll disobey you, Levi. Just this once..

I was about to urge my horse to burst into faster sprint, but Levi spoke again, calmly.

"If you make this choice, (Y/N), I will not so easily forgive you for it."

My chest pounded, almost making me wince. Levi's expression was blank, but I knew he really meant what he said. I closed my eyes tight, only opening them to steal a peak at Ymir again.

Shit. Why did it have to be this way?

I wanted nothing more than to stay with him, to look into his eyes and know he'd be there with me through everything. I wanted to be weak and know the feeling of someone who truly cared for me in ways I couldn't  imagine, nor deserve.

I knew I did not deserve Levi's heart, but it seemed I had it anyway; just as he had every last piece of mine.

"I'm sorry, Levi."

I loved Levi more than anything, but I'd come to realise that he wasn't my only reason for living anymore. I had others who relied on me now, and who I now knew meant so much more to me than I ever thought they could.

With that, Levi was no longer at my  side. I continued towards my original  target. I heard him call my name, to which I responded;

"I won't die!"

"Don't die." I whispered to myself.

With a blank expression Levi watched me disappear before him. A sudden weight in his chest caused by my decision to leave him behind, just as so many of his other comrades had done. Levi knew the feeling of being left behind too well, and after promising to never cause him that pain again, I had done so anyway. Levi muttered to himself before returning to the other Scouts.

"Survive."
