Chapter Forty-Six – Home

Luna Winter's P.O.V.

I follow Rico and Owen as they guide me towards the car, the three of us silent as we make our way through the forest. I can hear the screams and howls from where everyone is at war, the sounds making me cringe. We are all lost in our thoughts, the sound of crunching leaves under our footsteps seeming too loud in the silence.

I pray that Kaden is okay and comes back safe. I don't want him to be harmed in any way, he already looked badly beaten up when his father had brought him into the prison.

I look to see that we are nearing the car, a quiet sigh escaping me. But then, I hear something rustle. I slow down, looking around to see where the noise came from. My eyes widen when I see Reid, carrying a gun towards the clearing. He is too far for us to stop him. A sick feeling rises with me and I don't think, I just run.

All that is going through my mind is that Kaden is going to get hurt. I knew his father wanted to kill him all along, he wasn't going to let either of us go if we had not escaped. I hear the boys yell my name when they realise I'm running towards the battlefield.

Reid catches my eye, a sadistic grin on his lips as he aims his gun towards Kaden, his finger edging towards the trigger. Desperation and fear sweeps through me like a chaotic storm and I know I must do something. But what?

I sprint towards Kaden and time seemed to slow down. My heart thunders away in my chest so loudly that the sound reaches my ears, my limbs feeling weak as I put every ounce of energy into running, my eyes solely fixated on him.

He is in wolf form with the moonlight shining down on his fur, making it glow ethereally. My heart hurts at the sight of his blood and wounds, chunks of fur and skin ripped out.

I end up running between the trees, out of his father's sight. I increase my speed until I'm charging towards him, my legs feeling like they will give out at any moment. Regardless, I push on because the thought of him leaving me terrifies me. I scream his name, frustration coursing through me when he doesn't hear.

And just as a shot rang through the air, I throw myself in front of Kaden.

At first, I felt nothing. Then everything all at once.

The war ceases as Kaden shifts and turns to grab hold of me when I drop towards the ground. A roar escapes him but the sound is muffled when it reaches my ears. My ears are ringing and my side hurts, I feel like I just got shoved hard by someone before a stinging sensation spreads throughout that area.

I can hear him now, but I'm struggling to breathe and stay awake. I don't want to close my eyes. I'm scared I won't wake up. I'm scared that this is the last time Kaden holds me in his arms, the last time I get to look at him.

But, I'm also relieved that it wasn't him who got shot. This pain is worth it if it means he's safe.

I look up at the moon and smile, the sight of it calming me down as pure chaos erupts around me. It's a bright circle in the dark sky, stars twinkling around it. A shaky sigh escapes my lips, a pained moan following soon after when my side reacts in protest to me breathing. It's beautiful.

Everything else is all a blur and I feel myself being picked up, being talked to as Kaden takes me somewhere. I open my eyes to see us in a car, turning to look up at him. He has tears in his eyes and it breaks my heart to see him like that. I want to hold him and tell him that everything is going to be fine. But, I can't. My body feels heavy, like lead.
