The gang world had definitely grown since I had started running. If this Pierson was a big threat, I would have to be careful. If he got me, he would probably give me to Carter.
I jumped as I heard the shrill ringing of a phone. I got up looking for it, but couldn't find it. If it was here, I could probably call Marty to bail me out. Cursing, I realised in was upstairs as it stopped. I sighed and went back to the bike.
"Hey Jessica! Sorry we took so long, April is being really difficult. Here, come and see the rest of the house!" Cautiously, I walked up the stairs and blinked my eyes at how bright the walls were.
"Not what you expected huh?" Alexis asked and I looked around the spacious house in awe. "Don't get used to it, we move every four months." She winced as a scream ripped through the house.
"Help!" A younger voice yelled. I looked around the corner and saw a girl struggling in Ryder's arms.
"We're not trying to hurt you, we're trying to rescue you dammit! Stop struggling!" Cautiously, I walked up to the girl.
"April right?" She nodded. "My name is Jessica, I just got here too. I don't think these three are trying to hurt us." I whispered, my eyes falling on a boy my age.
"This is Alexis." I pointed to her and she beamed. "Ryder." He glared at me, and then I turned to the boy.
"And Mason, right?" He nodded as he walked away. "Not the friendliest fellow is he?" April giggled along with me, taking my hand.
"I trust you." She whispered and I smiled. "Why am I here?" April asked as she slid behind me.
"We want to protect you from Pierson, April. We're on the run here, and we try to protect kids like you from the gangs. You stay with us for a while, and then I can make you a new identity, and you can go live with a new family." Alexis said kindly, as the little girl latched onto my legs.
"Hey! Stop!" April screamed as Ryder pulled her away from me. He looked her up and down, and lifted her chin.
"She's young, and will get adopted easily. Mason, tell me a colour." April stepped back, but Ryder just shoved her forward.
"I'd say a blue. Pierson's not that desperate for her at this point, but he'll try to get here." Price? Mason made his way over to me, looking me over.
"Now Jessica here, she's a red. Carter needs her desperately, and she's eighteen and attractive. Perfect for them." He spat out. I absentmindedly smoothed down my brown hair as Ryder looked at me.
"Why are you evaluating me as if I were a pig at the farmer's market?" All eyes turned to me as Mason raised his eyebrow.
"Your colour is how desperate the gang world wants you Jessica. We do this to register the danger level and how easy it will be to get you a new identity." Alexis said quietly, a small smile on her face.
"Jessica, you'll be stuck with us for a few months, but we can get April here to a new family in a couple of weeks. Provided we don't get caught." Ryder declared, opening up a computer.
"Which we won't." Alexis assured me. "We're the best at what we do, we've been a group for years now. You'll be safe with us, I promise." April clung to my leg as I leaned down to her level.
"Alexis, let's put April here to bed, I bet she's had a long day. "She nodded, and offered April her hand. The little girl tentatively took it as I gave her a hug goodnight.
"Sure. We made up a room just for you April, and I bought you some toys. Do you like dolls?" Alexis chatted with her until they left the room.
"How long have you been running?" Ryder interrogated me.
