Dan is a mute boy, selectively mute to be more specific. It was stereotypical that selectively mute people were choosing not to talk but he emotionally couldn't.

Dan had went rushing to his parent's room in excitement about losing his first tooth. He felt like this was the coolest thing ever, he'd lost his front tooth! The doors flew open and Dan's smile didn't drop. That was until his eyes opened.

"d-daddy?" he started, "daddy are you okay? you're bleeding a lot. do you have a boo-boo? i can fix you right up!" he urged and urged but young Dan didn't want to process it. he was only young. he shouldn't understand that his dad wouldn't wake up.

"momma! momma please! daddy won't wake up!" young dan yelled as loud as he could and eventually heard footsteps.

"yes honey, what do you- oh my god dan! dan what happened?" his mom's face was dulling as the seconds went by.

"momma, i walked in and he wouldn't wake up! i asked if he needed me to fix his boo-boo on his neck but he didn't answer!" tears streamed and streamed down his face and he remembered what his momma had told him once. in case something ever went this bad, call 9-9-9; that's what he went and did.

In the end, dan's acts were heroic, but they weren't enough. he was minutes too late. his dad had lost too much blood. dan felt useless. it was only a matter of time before that glow in his eyes faded and his throat had his own hands at it, closing it forever. dan's train of thought was stupid.

"if i couldn't save my own daddy, then what's the point of using my voice anymore?"

This was drilled in his brain since he began thinking it at such a small age. He'd gone by it and never planned to stop.

Soon after that, everyone just seemed different. His mum was hardly ever at the house; she was only working to distract herself from the looming silence filling the house everyone once called home. But despite her pain, she was still trying to be a very good mother. Taking it really easy on dan and his brother.

His brother was the opposite. He never left the house, he rarely ate and was almost never seen out of his room. school wasn't an option anymore, so he dropped out in year 9. when dan did have the chance to catch him, he only saw his dull eyes, bony figure, and a sunken in face. his father was his best friend, and now he's gone.

Going into year 11, Dan's forced to start another school after being bullied so bad he had to go to the hospital at one point. On the first day, he met a boy named phil. phil likes to talk a lot but did have a quiet side. he's in a few of dan's classes. despite the way they met, phil deemed them as friends from the beginning.
he's probably just pretending.

dan doesn't talk, he can't talk. the hand around his throat never loosens, no matter what.

he isn't comfortable enough with anyone to even bother talking. so he doesn't let anyone in
as if anyone would try to come in any way.

he's just a boy who draws and has two demons sitting on his shoulders
not a boy who finds himself healing from those blue-green-yellow eyes and gorgeous smile

but oh, how wrong he was on that last part.

phil is a talking boy and he rambles a lot. he suffers from anxiety so he either talks too much or not much; it's how he copes with his own demons. he met a boy on his first day of year 11 and he knew he had to help him. phil knew that him and dan would get along well, despite how they first met. he did know sign language after all so communication was an option.

he loves making dan smile
but he sees the way his eyes don't crinkle at the corners as they should.

he loves looking at his brown-honey eyes that seemed to be the rarest of colours
but he sees the dullness hiding behind the oh so beautiful colour

he wants to help before its too late

he promised himself that he wouldn't fall in love with the idea of healing the broken boy
but its just one broken promise, right?
