Chapter 1

Sam sat sharpening a celestial bronze knife when she saw Percy and Luke sparring a few feet away; for a second she thought Percy was going to lose, and then he knocked the sword out of Luke's hand. A frown crossed her face when Luke told him to do it again, only to find that he couldn't. Sam went back to sharpening her dagger, before sliding it into a sheathe and getting up but as she turned to leave, Luke called out to her. " Sam, wait up!"

She frowned as he ran over to her, before they began to walk through the camp." I know we agreed that I would stop asking, but could you check again?" He asked and she looked away.

" Luke, I get that your worried, but-"

" Please." He pleaded." I know you said that it was only a possibility, but I just want to make sure."

She let out a sigh before grabbing him by the front of his shirt, and dragging him behind one of the cabins. Once they were out of sight, she reached up and placed the palm of her hand to his chest. After a few minutes, the color drained from her face, and she would have collapsed if Luke hadn't caught her. " Are you alright?"

" I'm fine." She said. " And its the same as the last time I checked."

He started to say something, but she cut him off as she shoved passed him and stumbled off toward the beach; tears threatening to show in her eyes.

Later that evening, Sam stood leaning against a tree as the rest of the camp approached all dressed in armor, armed with weapons and ready for their weekly game of capture the flag. Sam had removed her leather jacket, and replaced it with black leather armor while her knife hung at her waist.

" Whos side is Sam on?" Percy whispered to Luke.

" Sam is only here to keep the monsters from eating everyone, she doesn't really join in all that much, but when she does she works with the Hermes or Apollo cabins. If your lucky, you'll catch sight of her in the scramble."

As they spoke, Sam glanced toward them before turning to vanish into the tree line, the shadows of the trees molding around her like a cloak, as she tucked her ebony hair under her dark helmet.

Several minutes later, Sam stood in a tree watching as Percy guarded the border between the two territories, which was a river that ran through the woods. A howl sounded through the trees, and Sam let out an annoyed sigh, but before she could go after the creature she was sure was about to become a problem, several kids from the opposite team attacked Percy.

Sam started to reach for her dagger, but stopped before dropping her hand as she watched.

'Come on, I know you have it in you. Prove to them that you aren't just another kid.' Sam mentally pleaded as they shoved him into the creak; the worst mistake they could have ever made, because Percy came back at them as if he had been doing this for years, managing to snap one of their spears in the process just before Luke came chagrining across the boundary line. Sam let out a laugh as she watched the kids who from the other team scramble after him, and having heard her, glanced up to find her watching him with a grin as everyone began to celebrate their victory, before a girl with blonde hair appeared next to him.

Sam climbed down but before she could go over to talk to Chiron, a guy with the back end of a horse for legs, she came to a stop at the sound of a growl. Sam let out a curse in Italian, having forgotten about the creature before turning to look at it as everyone froze. The blonde yelled at Percy to run, but it lunged before Percy even had time to comprehend her words, it would have torn him to shreds had Sam not been there; no one had even seen her move as she stood between the hound and Percy, her hand out in front of her while the other was outstretched in front of Percy. " One more step, and I'll send you to the depths of Tartarus, you overgrown Chihuahua." She snapped and the hound let out a growl.

Sam rolled her eyes before tapping her foot on the ground a few times, a second later the ground under the hound split apart and it disappeared into the earth. Percy looked at Sam in shock as she turned to look at him, before shoving him backwards into the river. The moment he hit the water, his wounds from his fight with the group from the other team began to heal. Several gaps filled the air when a green light appeared above his head in the shape of a trident.

" Welcome to the family, Percy." Sam told him as the image faded, before seeming to disappear into thin air right along with it.
