You rubbed your chin, barely withstanding a fit of shivers. "Th-then what are y-you going to d-do?" you asked, looking back at Bill as the magenta aura faded from his body.
"Well, do something I never thought I'd do in my life. Especially toward a human. And yes, I know, it sounds like exactly what you were thinking but get out of your head for a minute and remember I'm not human, usually. I'm going to transfer a bit of my power to you. Pretty much... I'm going to literally become a part of you."
"... Why?" you asked, trying to comprehend what this generally very possessive (quite literally) demon was saying. Transfer some of his powers?
Bill sighed, not his usual "you're so dumb" sigh, but more of a sad sigh. "Well... because... last time I saw someone's eyes glazed over like yours were, they were carving a prophecy into a cave and were dead while doing so," he explained.
"W-what?! Are you saying-"
"Yes. I'm saying you're dead. Your body died about an hour ago. When you fell down the ridge."
"But-"
Bill interrupted you once more. "Look," he said, pointing to the place you had fell.
You looked and found a sight that would have given you a heart attack- had your heart been beating. Your body was lying in the exact spot you had fallen face first. Your hat had fallen off and your hair was sticking out in the direction of the wind, frozen like icicles. It was your body, lying dead and unmoving in the snow. "B-but... i-if I died then.... w-why..." you mumbled.
"Why did I pretend like you hadn't? Why can I see you? Why aren't you in some heaven or hell or purgatory? Why are you still cold?" Bill finished your sentence, listing off the questions in your head. "If I had reacted, you would have freaked out and I wouldn't have you as calm as you are now. As for me seeing you, you're a ghost. Plus it's easier for me to see ghosts than it is for normal humans. Why you're a ghost? Well, since I'm not from this dimension, and your dimension is picky, it doesn't recognize me as someone who has found you. You're a lost soul. Doomed to roam the mountain aimlessly. You also had something to do in life that you couldn't complete, and that was telling me you wanted to join me. So even if the Pines did find your body and give it a proper burial, you'll remain as a ghost." Bill sounded rather emotionless during his explanation. "Being cold... that's my fault. I burn spiritual energy being here. Usually it's just leftovers but I'm literally burning you up. So you're going to start feeling what your body feels. Which is why I had to make sure you could handle the transfer. My fire... Imagine an oil lamp. You're the oil. As soon as I set my hand ablaze, I'm using up even more of your energy. If you don't have much left, I could end up sending you straight to the real afterlife. And there's no way in hell am I going to leave you to the mercy of whatever god you believe in because they all suck."
Your next question, while you were listening, had nothing to do with Bill's explanation. You were too concerned for... well... Bill. "Are you... doing okay...?" you asked, reaching out to him.
Bill instantly flinched away from your hand. "No more touching!" he screamed out of what seemed to be.... fear? "It will take more energy! Just stay there!" Bill did not even acknowledge your question. Instead, he floated further away, muttering to himself.
You were feeling better physically-- or spiritually, to be technical-- but you were really worrying about Bill. He had never really acted like this before.
You found yourself wandering back to your body. You were drawn to it. But you were dead, so how could you still be connected? Was it because you were a lost soul?
You looked at the journal, it had fallen out of your coat and was opened to a strange page. "The Lost Spirit" it read.
You sat down on the snow and began to read.
