Katara gave very specific directions on how to find Tomi's father, or at the very least his grandfather. Tomi was ready to leave the moment we left Katara, but I had to talk some sense into him.
"Tomi, you don't even know if he's there. This could be really dangerous," I tell him, panicking a bit myself. Even if he was there, what if the person Tomi found had been changed by his powers?
"Lina, please. I'll be fine," he promises me. "This is something I need to do."
I sigh in defeat. "Fine, but I'm coming too. You need a bender to protect you."
Tomi gives me a look. "First off, no I don't. Don't pull that nonbender card on me. And second, last I checked, you weren't exactly a master waterbender."
"I've been practicing" I explaining, turning some snow into water. I play with it for a moment until I toss it at Tomi. He hardly has time to put his hands up in defense. I give him a victorious smile when he ends up shocked and wet.
"Fine, you're better, but I still don't need any protection," he states. Why was he being so stubborn about this? I just wanted to help.
"Okay, I won't be there to protect you. I'll go on my own, as a personal history trip." Tomi raises an eyebrow at me. "I can use this as an opportunity to learn about my tribe."
He hesitates for a moment, but sighs in defeat. "Fine, I guess you're coming."
"Perfect."
We pack some bags full of snacks, supplies, and warm clothes. Katara said that our destination would only take a few hours to reach, but I knew that the cold could be very harsh.
"Lina! I have something for you!" Halli calls just as we're about to leave. I take a guess that Katara remembered to tell her we were going. Halli reaches into her bag and hands me a small compass, about the size of my hand. Inside the compass is are three swirls, the symbol of the air nomads.
"Where did you get this?" I ask, admiring the artifact.
"Katara gave it to me to study. It used to belong to Avatar Aang before he died. I've been studying it, and it should still work on your trip," Halli explains. A thought suddenly occurs to me that I hadn't thought of before. How had I missed it all this time? Katara. She was the girl in all of the stories, who went on all the adventures with Avatar Aang until they eventually got married. This was that Katara.
I don't have time to worry about that fact now. I give Halli a quick hug. "I'll see you when I get back," I tell her.
"See you then," she responds.
I’m still stuck up on Katara and Aang when Tomi and I head out into the barren wilderness of the South. How did I miss that? She was in just about every history book made after the Hundred Year War. How could she not have told me?
"Lina?" Tomi asks, waving his hands at me.
"Huh, did you say something?" I ask.
"Um, I just said thanks. For doing this and all." It might have been the cold, but I think I saw Tomi's cheeks turn red.
Tomi and I must have been walking for an hour now. I could barely feel my toes and my fingers were numb. It wasn't snowing yet, but the sky looked gray. Tomi isn't too chatty, but I'm sure that's because he has a lot to think about.
"Tomi," I say, and he looks at me. "How far are we?" My teeth chatter as I try to get the words out.
He looks at his map, then looks around the area. "It should only be--Lina!"
In a split second Tomi is tackling me to the ground, forcing me to let out a little scream. I’m about to ask him what he's doing when a shadow passes over our heads. I spin around to follow the shape and see a wolf staring down at us. Tomi springs to his feet, squaring off with the wolf. The creature is about to pounce again when a puddle of ice creeps up his legs. He whimpers, trying to free himself.
"Lina! Was that you?" he asks.
I'm about to answer when a huge laugh comes from behind us. Tomi is already following the sound as I get to my feet.
"You're little friend wasn't gonna help you," the voice says. As I stand up, I see a large man dressed in water tribe clothing standing before us. He's got a thick, brown beard and a heavy winter jacket on. He is definitely too intimidating to argue about bending with.
"That was you?" Tomi asks.
"I'm not that little!" I say. He only laughs some more.
"Who are you, and what brings you out here?" he questions us, becoming serious.
"Um, I’m Tomi, and this is Lina. We're here looking for the tribe of exiled men," he explains. I want to tell him to sound more confident, but I'm not sure that's going to happen.
The man looks us up and down. "City folk, are ya?"
How'd he guess? "He is. I've been in the tribe for a few months," I explain.
The man seems to think for a few more minutes. "Tomi, you say? I suppose I can take you back to us," he says.
Tomi and I exchange a look. "You mean, you're one of them?"
The man laughs again. "No, I'm out here for fun," he tells us, already walking in the direction he came. "While you come, grab any wood you see!" he says to us. "We're running low."
Tomi and I exchange another look, but he starts to follow the mysterious man. I sigh, and tag after Tomi.
"I didn't catch your name," Tomi says once he's next to the man.
"Elisha," the man responds. "And you, why did you come looking for us? Perhaps if we’re out here, we don't want to be found."
I see Tomi cringe a little bit at this remark, at the idea that his dad ran away from him. "I need to find my dad," he responds.
Elisha only nods slightly. "What about her? Lina, is it?" He turns to look at me.
"Um, I'm just helping Tomi," I explain. "I'm a waterbender," I add.
He nods. Finally, he stops in front of a small cave.
"They're in there?" Tomi asks, peering inside. We would just barely fit in there.
Elisha grins and take a step back. Then he comes forward and does a series of moves. He seems to melt the bottom of the cave, make it grow another few feet. Under the spot where the ground once was, there's a camp set up, with at least twenty men gathered around a fire.
