In French, all nouns have a gender- masculine or feminine. This is one of the most confusing parts about the French language, but it is best to remember that nouns are gendered in English too, except the gender of the nouns will not influence the sentence. In French, it will.

The Indefinite Article

This is used for a noun that is not specified, e.g. a door, a sweet, some girls, some men, an apple, etc.

There are three words for this article.

1) Un- Un is used to describe a masculine noun.
Note that nothing is added if the word begins with a vowel.

Un bonbon- a sweet
Un garçon- a boy

2) Une- used for a feminine noun

Une porte- a door
Une femme- a woman/ wife
Une fille- a girl/ sister

3) Des- used for any plural noun

Des portes- some doors
Des femmes- some women
Des bonbons- some sweets

The Definite Article

There are four words for this article:

1) Le- used for a masculine noun that does not begin with a vowel

Le garçon- the boy

2) La- used for a feminine noun that does not begin with a vowel

La fille- the girl

3) L'- used for any singular noun that begins with a vowel

L'homme- the man

4) Les- used for any plural noun

Les garçons- the boys
Les filles- the girls
Les femmes- the women
Les hommes- the men
