"Riku, please, come see me after class." Iruka announced after he finished forming the teams of the new genin. I was left out.
I watched as the whispers began to buzz around, "It's because she started so late."
"She failed her combat exams."
"She doesn't have enough experience."
I sank down in my chair, hiding my face behind my pale blonde hair. It's true. I didn't start the academy at the same time as everyone else. I only started almost three years ago. Everyone else started around age four or five. I was ten.
But is that why I wasn't put in a team? Or is it because there's no room for me? Or am I just not cut out for the ninja life.
My heart was beating a mile a minute. I could feel panic set in. Why wasn't I chosen?
Finally, lunch rolled around. Everyone was allowed out while I had to wait.
As soon as the last student left, Iruka leaned against his desk, he gave me a warm smile, "I want to start by telling you, you did amazingly well on all of your exams."
I felt hope bubble up, "Really? Then why wasn't I given a team?"
"Because," He sighed, "The Hokage wants me to give you an option, you can either stay in the academy one more year... or, if you feel like you're prepared, you can be added as a fourth member to a team."
A fourth member?
I've never heard of team consisting of more than the three members and their sensei.
"It's my choice?"
He nodded, "But only if you feel you're ABSOLUTELY ready."
I bit my lip and sat back in my chair to think about it. If I stay in the academy, my theoretical skills will improve, but if I join a team, I'll be moving up in the ninja world. It should be a no brainer.
"I'd like to join a team." I said, confidently, my light green eyes meeting Irukas'.
He sighed in relief, "That's what I was hoping you would say. You'll meet your new team in this room after lunch! Now, run along and get something to eat."
I smiled and quickly grabbed my things, making my way to the school yard.
As I walked through the court yard all the girls were going on and on about the kiss Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha shared. I think it was an accident so I don't see what the big deal is.
I don't personally know either of them, I sit in the back of the class and I just watch everything happen.
I sat down on the far end of the court yard and took out my bento box. It's not very big, just rice and soba noodles, but I know it's delicious. Soba noodles are the best, my favorite.
As I sat there eating, I saw Shikamaru, Ino, and Choji eating together. That's nice. I wish I knew who my team was. I could eat with them instead of being alone right now.
I wonder whose team I'm on anyway. Could it be Shikamaru's? Shikamaru seems nice. Choji just eats... really, I don't know much about him. But Ino, she's a pain. A real big pain. I think she has a crush on Sasuke... or maybe it's Shikamaru, I can't remember.
