I find that high school hallways on the first day of school are a whole lot like garbage dumps. They’re both crowded and rancid, and both have piles of new debris coming in, constantly. Not that all the niners were garbage, necessarily; I have always been taught never to judge one by their cover. Which recently has become especially hard and something that requires much more effort than it should.
“Oh god. The freshies are pigs.” Hilary glances around us in disgust. A particular group of juvenile newbies cursing each other out catch her eye.
“We were once their age too, you know? Like about three months ago” I cringe at the thought.
“I know. But were we really that inexperienced?”
“I would hope not.” I sigh, “Where’s Mia?”
“I’m right here!” I practically jump, as a nimble hand it placed upon my shoulder.
“What took you so long?”
“Ugh, Stanley would not let me get out of the house. He was clinging to my leg, for dear life!” Stanley is Mia’s cat, and besides being incredibly adorable, he is much like Cling Wrap when it comes to his owner.
“I can tell,” I pluck a strand of cat hair from Mia’s gathered skirt. “But besides the cat hair, you still look cute.” Which was true, for Mia looks cute in just about everything. It’s the kind of things that you can get away with when you have a petite frame.
“No kidding.” Hilary looks down at Mia, which is always amusing to witness because they have an 8 inch height difference. “If only I had your body. Then if I wore heels people would shower me with compliments like, ‘Oh! You look so mature!’ instead of ‘What’s up, Shawn Bradley? Looks like you’re getting a raise today! Not that it’ll make much of a difference.’”
“Whoa, who said that?”
“My brother,” Hilary rolls her eyes, “Who else?”
“Okay, you have to admit, that was kind of good.” I laugh.
“Right? Just sucks how the only good insult he can come up with is directed towards me. Like, I am not even that tall!”
“Yeah okay Giraffa Camelopardalis.”
