A promise ring is a ring that is given to a bf/gf to show that they are serious about the relationship, but not ready to propose. It's normally given out by young couples aka highschool or college.
Jeff: He'd give you one of those cute rings that look like tiaras because you're his princess. He'd be the type to make sure he finds the perfect ring so he spent an entire saturday searching for rings online. You and him normally hang out on Saturdays so you'd be really confused and think that he was bailing on you. But Jeff paid for next day shipping so he could give you the ring as soon as possible. So you were pretty annoyed with Jeff for bailing on your plans and you were planning on ignoring him. But Jeff texts "come outside babe" and you know that you love Jeff too much to ignore him.When you come outside, Jeff gives you the ring and explains everything.

Zach: You're Zach's first girlfriend and he isn't used to romance but he loves you and wants to give you something to show his love. Zach's would tell his sister about his idea to get you a promise ring and she'd get really excited and beg him to let her help. Zach would let his sister show him some rings but ultimately the final choice would be his. Once he saw the ring he knew it was the one, just like he knew that you're the one.

Alex: I think that we're all aware that Alex has a very unique/eclectic style, and his ring choice would reflect that. Most guys would go for a cubic zirconia as the main stone, but Alex isn't most guys. He had thought about getting you a promise ring before, but he hadn't seen one that was unique enough. His grandma had him drive her to an antique shop, and that is where he found the ring. It was a beautiful vintage opal ring. When he gave you the ring he said "It reminds me of you. You're so unique and beautiful and I just thought that it was perfect for you."

Justin: so Justin is probably the most limited on funds but he loves you nonetheless. Justin is the type to buy you something simple yet meaningful. He was planning on buying you an infinity sign ring, but he remembered that the infinity sign became tacky because it was a fad a few years ago. He thought that a knot ring would be minimalistic yet symbolic. (Normally a knot ring stands for marriage but in this case it stands for love)

Clay: You're a huge fan of American Horror Story, and Clay knows that because you force him to watch it with you. You've told him "I don't like normal things" partially because black is your favorite color and partially because you like making AHS references. Clay saw a black ring and boughti it on the spot. He said "I know that you don't like normal things, so I painted the ring black".

Tony: Tony doesn't give his bf a promise ring because he's very lowkey about his love. But he does give his boyfriend mixtapes.
Bryce: Bryce doesn't give a promise ring, he recieves one. His promise ring is a pair of standard issue handcuffs given to him bye the justice system. The judge gave him a life sentence without parole and promised him "You'll get out of these cuffs when you enter your cell, but you'll never get out of prison."
