PROMPT: He's stressed and mad, so you calm him down.

You could tell by the way that his shoulders never relaxed completely that he was on edge and quietly brooding. He wouldn't admit his fury until one of the boys did something reckless again, but he'd be willing to let his irritation grow which never really made sense to you. Of course, Thorin never really was one to share how he was feeling. No, that would be too weak of him- Thorin Oakenshield son of Thrain and ruler of the throne once the kingdom was established again.

So, most days you had to practically tear the emotions out of him to know what was going on in that mind of his. Sure, body language could tell you when he was upset, but it was nice to know how you might be able to fix it. He wouldn't want you to worry about him, but that didn't stop you from doing just that. There was only really one thing you could do with that being said; you walked over to where he sat and plopped down next to him.

''What's got you all wound up?'' you wondered with a sigh while you settled into the ground beside him.

He looked at you momentarily before going back to his unimportant work of clearing his boots of rocks and pebbles. Your smile was the last thing he wanted to see when he was mad, because he knew it would only lighten his mood and he would rather stay in his brooding mood so that he could let out the aggression when fighting. ''Nothing, I am fine,'' he assured you with a dismissive smile.

''I don't believe that,'' you challenged while you kept your light hearted smile, ''what was it? Fili and Kili put another snake in your boot, or is it about earlier with the Orcs?''

''It's nothing,'' he insisted but when he looked up to see your knowing look he finally caved. ''This isn't going how I had expected,'' he admitted.

You gave him a sympathetic look, ''surely you must have known it wouldn't have been a walk in the park.''

''Yes,'' he nodded because he was all too aware of the impending dangers, ''And I know that it had to be done now, but I fear that horrible things are to come.'' His gaze wondered over to where Kili and Fili seemed to be playing tug-of-war with a rather annoyed Bilbo. ''They are not ready for things like this, Y/N.''

''They are men, Thorin,'' you argued in the boys case, though, you were rethinking your statement when you looked back at their game. ''I know they will always be boys to you, but look at how they've grown.''

''Yes, but they are so unprepared for this,'' he pointed out, ''They almost got themselves killed today and- dammit! They don't listen to me when they should!'' You sighed heavily at his raising voice, and you moved so that you were behind him. At first his expression grew even more sour when he thought that you were going to leave him there alone (because as much as he hated to admit it, it actually felt better to talk to you than to let out his anger in battle), but then he felt your hands on his back as you began to message his tense shoulders.

''Everything will work itself out in the end,'' you told him, ''It always has and it always knows. Who knows, maybe those boys will surprise you.'' You whispered the last part in his ear and after you said it the boys turned to wave at the both of you. Thorin couldn't help but smile at your words. Things would work out.
