Chapter 12 - Spence's Theory

Umupo siya sa tabi ko. At napansin niya ang hawak kong phone.

"At ano naman ang iniisip ng aking uniko hijo?"

"Yung tungkol sa pagkawala ni Marcus Beckendorf"

At inabot ko sa kaniya ang phone.

"Sinusubukan kong tumulong. Yan yung text message ng kidnapper sa kapatid niya. Iniisip kong mabuti kung ano'ng pwedeng makuhang clue mula diyan"

"Ano'ng naisip mong clue?", tanong niya habang pinagmamasdan ang text

"Na yung phone number, hindi sa Pilipinas. At nakaka-duda rin yung pagkaka-construct sa sentence. Maging yung spelling."

"May point ka. Hindi nga sa Pinas ang ganitong digits given the fact na 639 or 09 ang dapat na umpisa ng mobile number natin. However, that's not always the case"

Napaisip ako sa sinabi ni Papa. Not always the case???

"911, 8888, 211, 222, 258, 2366!"

Tinignan ko si Papa.

"These are mobile digits also based in the Philippines yet don't start with 639 or 09 and are not 11-digits"

"Ah alam ko na! You mean, may kinalaman sa business ang pag-abduct sa kaniya?"

Tumango siya!

"If my theory is true, then isang businessman ang dumukot or nagpa-dukot. Only powerful people can have enough resources to use any digits they want. Furthermore, wala pa namang reports about somebody calling for ransom."

"Ngayon naiintindihan ko na. At least meron nang isang clue."

"But I'm afraid your one and only clue will do no good in finding who the culprit is"

Hindi ako umimik.

"Malawak ang mundo ng business. Lalo na't maraming businessmen sa London. They also have their own connections to different people in various countries. Pwedeng yung may pakana nito kay Marcus, nasa London. May tao lang siya dito. Ang tanong sino ang may pakana? Yan ang mahirap sagutin. As what I've said, business realm is so vast. I assume maraming rivals ang Beckendorf. So sino sa kanila? You need list. To claim if somebody on the list has entered our country, you need to visit airports to check their records of flights at walang kasiguraduhan kung may makukuha kang impormasyon lalo't separated ka sa mga pulis. See? It's a really long process. Unless you do the shortcut. But it would take all your courage and selflessness to do it. Forget it! "

"Ba't parang dini-discourage niyo ako ngayon Pa?"

Kung kanina medyo enjoy pa siya sa pag-analyze sa text message, ngayon, parang seryoso na siya.

"Hindi parang. I'm really discouraging you son"

"Pa!"

"Meddling on the case is I think a very bad idea---a very dangerous thing. Isa pa, ipinagbawal makialam ang mga detective. Better leave the investigation to the cops."

Kitang-kita ang pag-aalala ni Papa sakin.

Natahimik ako sa sinabi niya.

"Iniisip lang kita. Why would you consume your time finding the culprit when you can leave it to the cops. Besides, sila naman talaga yung inatasan. Cops are not bad in investigating. They are much equipped in doing it!", pag-encourage niya sakin.

"Another, kung tama yung teorya natin, the culprit must be a very dangerous person na babanggain niya maging ang makapangyarihang pamilya sa London. Thus, it will really be dangerous dahil hindi natin alam kung ano ang kaya niyang gawin"

Napaisip ako sa mga sinabi ni Papa. Sabagay! Ano nga naman ang laban ko.

Maya-maya pa ay tumayo si Papa.

"Baba na tayo. Baka kakain na!"

"Siya nga pala Pa...."

Muli niya akong hinarap

"I think I know the reason why detectives are not allowed to join the investigation"

Tinignan niya ako with a curious look.

"Marcus dreams of becoming a detective one day, something that his Dad oppose because he wants him to take his place as a businessman. It's the reason why he flew all his way from London to the Philippines which later on became the chance of the abductors to get him. Perhaps his dad thinks Marcus' dream is the cause of this crisis. Kaya siguro wala siyang tiwala sa mga detective"

Napaisip si Papa sa sinabi ko...

"Then, it's their lost!", Sabay shrug at muli ay naglakad na siya palabas ng kwarto.
