Chapter 1: And So It Begins

As you go thru life you'll see
There is so much that we
Don't understand
And the only thing we know
Is things don't always go
The way we planned
But you'll see everyday
That we'll never turn away
When it seems all your dreams come undone
We will stand by your side
Filled with hope and filled with pride
We are more than we are
We are one!
     At this, Rose joined in:
If there's so much I must be
Can I still just be me?
The way I am?
Can I trust in my own heart?
Or am I just one part
Of some big plan?
     Nicholas cut back in:
Even those who are gone
Are with us as we go on
Your journey has only begun
Tears of pain
Tears of joy
One thing nothing can destroy
Is our pride
Deep inside
We are one!
We are one
You and I
We are like the earth and sky
One family under the sun
All the wisdom to lead
All the courage that you need
You will find when you see
We are one!
     Nicholas smiled at his daughter. "You'll understand someday, Rose. For now, let's go home and sleep. Tomorrow's a brand new day."
     With that, father and daughter returned home, side by side.
                        * * * * *
     However, Merlin's homecoming wasn't so pleasant. His big brother, Charles, was bullying Merlin's few friends and causing general chaos. But, as usual, when Regina came back with Merlin in tow, Charles was suddenly the perfect little angel.
    Regina brushed her teenage son away to turn on Merlin.
    "What did you think you were doing?!"
    "I'm sorry, mother. She wasn't mean like the others. She was kind to me and I thought we could be-"
     "Friends?!" Regina interrupted. "You thought you'd get to the daughter and then the king would welcome you with open arms? What an idea!" After pondering for a second, she changed her mind. "You brilliant child! Never in my life has anyone come close to being as clever or as powerful as my beloved, departed Karayan! But now you have shown genius just like your father! Come with me!"
     Regina led her two sons and the other Outlanders to the cave that they'd chosen to sleep in. At this, she placed Merlin in his special spot before announcing, "I now see the path to our glorious return to power! Now rest, dear, for tomorrow our real work begins."
     And, at this, she began to sing:

Sleep my little Merlin
Let your dreams take wing
One day when you're big and strong
You will be a king!
     The two bid each other goodnight before Regina continued:
I've been exiled, persecuted,
Left alone with no defense
When I think of what that brute did
I get a little tense!
But I dream a dream so pretty
That I don't feel so depressed
Cuz it soothes my inner kitty
And it helps me get some rest
The sound of Nick's dying gasp
His daughter squealing in my grasp
His wife and Queen's mournful cry
That's my lullaby!
Now the past I've tried forgetting
And my first I could forgive
Trouble is I know it's petty
But I hate to let them live!
     Charles joined in:
So you found yourself somebody
Who'd chase Nick up a tree
     Regina grinned maliciously:
Oh the battle maybe bloody
But that kinda works for me!
The melody of angry growls
A count a point of painful howls
A symphony of death, oh my!
Now that's my lullaby!
     She returned to where Merlin was now fast asleep:
Karayan's gone
But Regina's still around
To love this little lad
Til he learns to be a killer
With a list for being bad!
     Charles growled in annoyance at Merlin:
Sleep ya little termite!
     Upon seeing his mother's face, however, he changed his mind:
I mean precious little thing
One day when you're big and strong
     Regina cut in:
You will be a king!
The pounding of the drums of war!
The thrill of the dragonlord's mighty roar!
    Charles added:
Joy of vengeance
And testify!
     Regina:
I can hear the cheering
     Charles (sarcastically):
Merlin! What a guy!
     Regina:
Payback time is nearing
And then our flag will fly
Against the blood red sky! 
That's my lullaby!   
     With that, Regina and the others burst into evil laughter. Soon, her plan would work. Once she'd trained her son and he grew up with her ideals, the king would die and the true king would take his place. And finally and at long last she would have her vengeance!
