I raise my hand, trying to shield my eyes from the beams of light coming through the cracked window. Sighing I sit up slowly, making sure i'm not putting too much pressure on my left arm. I hiss when i feel the familiar sting in my wound that i got a few days ago when someone tried to shoot me for the food I found in a grocery store back in Richmond. I got away with a bullet in the arm, thank god i was faster than him.

I don't have a lot of knowledge when it comes to treating wounds but i know that I shouldn't lose a lot of blood or get infected, especially in a world where you can't trust anyone but yourself and there's no way you could get medical help.
The bandage is stained with blood but at least nothing looks infected.

I get up and look around, trying to figure out where I am. Oh right, the gas station. The place looks like a grenade went up in here, empty tins, rags, dirt and trash are covering the floor but at least nobody else decided to occupy the building at the side of the road, so it was a safe place for me to stay for the night. But I can't stay any longer, places like gas stations, grocery stores and warehouses attract a lot of survivors and I don't wanna catch another bullet, so I grab a few cans of food and my backpack with my blanket and weapons and get ready for another long day of walking.

That's what my life consists of now. Walking, running, fighting and sleeping in abandoned places. The whole world is one abandoned place. Nothing is like it used to be. This isn't one of those cliché apocalypse movies, this is reality. And any day could turn out to be your last day.
Sometimes you have to throw the last drop of humanity out of your system to make it, to survive. It's the time where you're not allowed to feel any guilt or pity. If you want to survive, you have to fight.

Most people lost their hope by now, this is the end of humanity and everyone knows it, even I do. But some people, including me, have this little light, this spark of hope, something worth fighting for when all you wanna do is give up and let this world devour you. This light is a person, a girl, my girl. I don't know if she's alive, but she has to be, she needs to be. And I won't give up until I find her, no matter how many streets i have to walk, how many people I have to defeat or how many bullets i have to take. I won't stop until I have Camila safe and sound back in my arms.

So here I am, walking along the empty road in the burning sun, carrying my shorty, always ready to use. Finally I can put my paranoia to good use. It's always better to be too careful than being too reckless. After a few hours I take out my map to check where I have to go to find the next city.

Of course I still have a few energy bars and canned beans but I'm running out of water. I need to find the next military station where I can get help, maybe they even have a working shower. I would kill to have a nice and long shower, I hate smelling like sweat, dirt and blood. A new hoodie would be nice as well, it'll be fall soon and once the days get colder, I need to stay warm so I won't get sick. A little cold can lead to death within a few weeks.

I trace the red line of the road on the map and find the next city that should have a military station, which is Washington. I should be there tomorrow night if keep the same pace. I'm getting closer and closer to New York, closer and closer to Camila. I smile a little at the thought of seeing her again and walk a little faster, I just need to be by her side as soon as possible.

After a few hours I take a break on the side of the road, my feet are killing me. I've always been a person who appreciates the beauty of nature, but since the breakout I got a completely different view of our planet. Even when we're on the edge of staying alive, trying to survive so our species won't vanish, the earth is as beautiful as always, maybe even more beautiful.

I take a half eaten snickers out of my bag and try to ignore the throbbing in my ankles while looking at the sunset behind the horizon. I do this a lot lately because it's just so calming. It reminds me of better days before everything began to fall apart.
