The hospital lets me leave around eight weeks later. They were going to release me sooner, but since I'm so tiny they wanted to make sure I was okay.
A nurse helped me into a wheelchair and wheeled me outside. Dad got me into the car and we drove home. In the car I noticed strong tension between mom and dad. Maybe they got into an argument or something.. That wasn't uncommon since they seem to argue about twice a week. I didn't worry too much about it because I'm used to tons of fighting.
One night they got into a really bad fight, which led to mom packing a bag and leaving. Dad walked upstairs and slammed his bedroom door. I carefully walked out of my room and listened outside his door. It sounded like he was crying. Ashley and Michael tell me to leave him alone and that it's best he calms himself down. I give them a disapproving look and walk into dads room. He looks up at me and says, "Destiny, please leave me alone. I don't want company right now." I completely ignore him and sit down on the bed next to him.
"Why are you crying?" I ask "Did mom say something mean?" His eyes shift toward me, but doesn't say anything. "Daddy, tell me." I say. He lets out a sigh and finally says, "Well, sweetie, your mother was unfaithful to me. I.. found her texting another man.." "But she can just say sorry to you and everything will be okay, right?" I ask. Dad lets out a small laugh and says, "I wish it worked that way."
Mom and dad got divorced about a month later. Ethan went off to go live with mom while the rest of us stayed with dad.
I learned that Conner would be getting out of the mental hospital soon, and would be staying with us. That sent shivers down my spine. I acted calm until it was time for me to go to bed. Then I cried myself to sleep, and thought about what awful things he'd do to me.
