this, my blue period. every dusk

very blue when hush

paints walls, eyes and you,

sheerest blue,

but blue

my street below has a navy hue

palms salute in perpetual profile,

camelthorns' sharp white darts pierce nightfall

where cars cool down in clicks and taps and

breeze moves by my face into the open space

to flow to mountains far and back

starlings swoop, grey ribbons looping,

their chatterings, trilling quavers in rows

in this open sky above those everblues

(a hawk ate a lizard here. after the kill, in the sun

i watched it tear the silver sheath into bloodless slivers;

it was beauty)

now cool turns cold,

familiar twilight folds me in its blue embrace

this place i love has my couplings and my loves

burned into its walls and ceilings

like hiroshima shadows;

has seen my best, my north and my quests.

my fetters, mad and fear stay here

where peace settles to protect this realm,

we sit and watch

this toy city

be pretty

in blue
