“So you’re just waiting?”
“Good things come in time, Kyler.” I smiled softly. “And some things are just not meant to be.”
I was referring to Louie and I but I realised that might have come out a bit harsh if he misunderstood. The pond water rippled slightly in the breeze and I watched fascinated.
“Say,” I began, looking back at him. “If things didn’t go wrong with your ex-girlfriend back then, would you still be with her now?” I spoke carefully, knowing my question was a bit random but I was really needed to know. Time passed and the willows swayed slowly back and forth.
“Probably not.” He answered after a while and closed his eyes. “But maybe, if it didn’t happen, I would still be normal.” He sighed and brought up one knee to rest his hand on. “Why do you think they do it?”
“We humans are strange. We do a lot of strange things but, you know, I used to think this over in high school.” I laughed. “I can’t believe I’m actually saying this aloud. Anyway, I believe there’s a reason behind everything we do. We don’t do things without a reason. There’s always a reason. No matter how small the thing we do, no matter how deep you have to delve. There’s a reason.”
“And what’s that?”
“I’m not defending them or anything, but judging from the message we received back in New York, I think they just enjoy the thrill of going against the law. Some people enjoy the thrill of getting away with it. But who knows, they might be being paid. You never know with people like them.”
I knew I was suggesting that someone close to us was responsible and the idea hurt but no matter how much it hurt, how many clues have there been?
“Enough with the serious talk, let’s go in.” I clapped my hands together, brightening my voice. Getting up, I took his hand and dragged him closer to the water’s edge before pushing him in. The water displaced around him and went under for a moment before resurfacing and gasping for air.
He was lucky he was in cargo shorts today. If he had worn jeans, he would be one uncomfortable person. He glared at me and pulled his wet shirt off and chucked it at me. It landed right in front of me and I kneeled down to pick it up when he grabbed my hands and dragged me in. I spluttered as a bit of water went up my nose. I slapped him on the arm as I attempted to get my nose to feel comfortable again.
“Dude, this is a white dress.” I yelled at him as I pulled the soaked material away from my body.
“Nah. It’s a see through dress.” He answered and I glared at him.
“Thanks a lot.” I replied sarcastically. I reach down to my feet, took off my thongs and chucked them to the edge. I walked calmly across the sandy bottom, praying that there wasn’t any glass there. Once I let myself relax, I noticed that the water was fairly warm and quite comfortable and be in. It came to just above my stomach. I splashed around and Kyler followed me, leading to a splash war. I don’t see how guys do it. I got onto my back and kicked my legs, creating a giant splash in his face. I laughed at his expression of utter shock and swam away.
We spent the next hour or so, just having fun. Me being myself and him letting himself go. For that while, we were just two people having fun, regardless of our circumstances.
I swam to the left edge and leaned against the rock. I gasped for air and panicked as I saw Kyler walking closer. I attempted to waddle in another direction but he came up pretty quick and pushed me up against the rock. He put his hands up on either side of me and trapped me between the rock and a hard place - his body.
I blushed at our close proximity and lay completely still against the rock. I stared into his gorgeous blue eyes, our gaze locked. He looked away first and rested his chin on my shoulder and whispered quietly into my ear.
“Are you scared to be with me?” He asked. My heart began to beat faster at his words.
“No, why?” I responded shakily.
“So this whole ‘people are after you’, doesn’t scare you?” He asked again for confirmation.
“It depends on what you mean.” He must have taken that as an acceptable answer.
“So, I’m thinking back to what you said before.” He paused slightly before continuing, “If you’re willing to give me a chance, I’m willing to try.” I felt my heart lift at his words and a smile graced my face.
“That’s a yes, right?” He asked again, referring to my smile. Before I could reply, he moved his lips to land on mine and I moved my hands to rest loosely at his neck as he ran his tongue along my bottom lip, making them part and letting him in.
