We were all in the kitchen. By we I mean my mom, dad, grandmother, grandfather, my mother's sister, and her husband. It was full of chatter and laughter when my grandmother speaks up and silents everyone.

"Its corrupt." She speaks loudly.

"Mother, not this again." My mother groans and grabs another bagel.

"The world was better before."

"You mean the wars, mother? The wars destroyed!" My mother was shouting.

"At least then we were able to talk outside and not hide our face! There was freedom! Rights! There's nothing now!"

"Please not today mother."

My sister walks in and no one notices.

"No. She's right. It's important. Let her talk." My sister is strong. Something I aspire to be.

"Oh, Alison. You don't need to hear this. At least not today." My mother walks over to Alison and starts tying up her hair in a bun.

"Please mom. Let her talk." My grandmother turn to my mother with a smug look.

"With the Shine you get certain rights, but you also lose rights. You lose liberty. I regret getting the damn thing myself. I miss it. Now its robotic. You're able to support yourself, but you're signing over your life."

"Mother! Saying a thing like that will get you in jail. At least you're not a Miser." Everyone looks at her. Miser is a term meaning lost or worthless. People started calling the unshined that years ago as a curse to them walking down the street.

My sister moves over to the counter and grabs an orange quickly then receives around ten hugs from everybody.

"You studied, right?" My mother asks with worry as my grandmother  just rolled her eyes in the corner.

"Yes mom. I gotta go now. Bye." She ran over to me before she left though. She leans down really close and whispers in my ear.

"Listen here Maxton, I will always be with you no matter what. No matter what." Then she gets up and walks towards the door. Right before she closes the door, she winks at me.

An hour after her Shining should have ended, we hear a knock at the door and open it expecting to see Alison, but instead we see to large men with a book.

"May we come in ma'am?" One of the men say.

"Yes..." She opens the door slightly and they walk in.

"We have some news about your daughter."

"What is she okay?" My mother asks worriedly.

"I'm afraid not. During her Shining, she suddenly disappeared and no one saw anything. We assume that the Shine dismissed her and killed her. She is what is known as Rogationem which briefly translates into Reject. It is very rare, but happened to your daughter. We are so sorry. As payment, we will give you money each week to support your family and you homelife. Well, as long as your son goes to the Shining." Each and every word made my mother more and more angry until she blew.

"We don't want your money! You made a mistake! Now fix it!" She was walking close to the government men until my father stepped in.

"Yes," He said. "It's a deal." My mother looks at my father with shock.

"Good." They walk out and turn around right before walking out. One of the men look at me and smiles.
